WAIKATO HUNT CLUB. ATTEMPT TO FILCH ITS DAY. WELLINGTON. June 30. In the House this afternoon the negotia tions of the Waikato Racing Club to secure the regular racing day of the Waikato Hunt ™aa (Labour Day) were described by Mr A. M. Samuel (Ohinemuri) as a most un sportsmanlike action, particularly coming from a racing club. The Waikato Hunt Club, he said, had enjoyed this day for over 20 years, and an attempt was now to be made to use the Racing Conference for the purpose of depriving it of this day He trusted that the members of the con ference would be too high-minded to be influenced by any such attempt. However, some members of the Waikato Racing Club were also members of the executive of the Hunt Club, and during a recent meeting of the Hunt Club two of these members had stated that the Government was going to cut out racing dates allotted to hunt clubs. They had used this a* arguments to get the Hunt Club to sell its date for a certain amount of money per annum. He believed, and said <o at the meeting, that nothing of the sort could be done without the country Brst being consulted, and the matter at least having been brought before the House. This was later confirmed by the Minister of Interna! Affairs, who stated that the Waikato Hunt Club, having used the certain date for 2G years, could continue to do so as long as it wished. He promised to see that it was not interfered with. The Waikato Racing Club Had gone further and had applied two years in succession for Labour Day—an attempt to use the Racing Conference to filch from the weaker body its only racing day. It was the intention of the president of the Waikato Racing Club to move at the Racing Conference to have all hunt meetings held within a certain period of the year—all for the one end. If carried through this would cause a great deal of concern in the sporting world, particularly in racing circles, and might lead to a revolution. In fact, none could say where it would Btop. Waikato had received two extra days and was now a four-day meeting, and Mr Samuel hoped it would not succeed in usurping the Hunt Club’s day.
