SIR JAMES ALLEN.
HIS FUTURE ACTIVITIES. AUCKLAND, June 29. Referring to the approaching return to New Zealand of the retiring High Commissioner, the New Zealand Herald says editorially: “Sir James Allen has been bo long in public life that complete retirement from it will probably not appeal to him While it is not likely that he will return to the htwly burly of active politics, he i* a man of too much vigour of mind, and with too keen an interest in affairs not to find, or at least to seek, some sphere of activity, ilis extensive experienct in New Zealand, broadened by the associations he has enjoyed while High Commissioner, make him one whose counsels could he of inestimable value to the Dominion. So much can he said of him with confidence but. when it comes to a question of the role he might play or the exact manner in which his services might be utilised, then speculation must be circumscribed by a want of knowledge of his own plans, and also by uncertainty about the immediate possibilities. “The leadership of the Legislative Council is a position at present temporarily filled. It has been officially suggested that when Sir Francis Bell returns from his Kent trip, he will resume the duty ho there for many years. His own words, prior to leaving, gave a different impression. If, then, Sir Francis is not available to lead the Council, Sft James Allen comes instantly to mind a<* having every qualification for the position. It is purely speculation and there it must bo left until time affords more indications of what these two well tried servants of tho country have planned for the future.”
