COURSE IN FORESTRY.

PROVISION OF SCHOLARSHIPS. AUCKLAND, June 22. A new course in forestry, designed to meet with the approval of leading sawmillers and others engaged in forestry work in the Dominion, has been drawn up by Professor Corbin, professor of forestry at the Auckland University College, and is now before the Senate of the University. The new course leads up to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Forestry. Eight full time students are now taking the forestry course in Auckland, and it is considered that it will be necessary later when the school develops to secure ’ssistanc- in a number of directions, including a ecturer in general forestry, a part time lecturer in forest zoology, a part time lecturer in fungoid tree diseases and bacteriology, and short lecture courses by eminent persons in special branches of the subject in which they are recognised' authorities. Four scholarships valued at £IOO a year for five years have been given bv Messrs Smith, Wylie, and it is explained that these are equivalent to five scholarships of £IOO a year for four years, the period of the course, which, together with the Government subsidy, makes the equivalent of 10 full course scholarships but it is probable that some of these may later be increased by post graduate scholarships. In a few years all these will be exhausted and others will be needed, and it is hoped to secure further scholarship endowments.
