RAILWAY OFFICERS CONFER.
MEETING OF DELEGATES. WELLINGTON, June 25. The annual conference of the Railway Officers’ Institute opened to-day, the presi dent (Mr V. R. J. Stanle”' presiding. Mr L. Aecker (chairman) and Mr C, I. Ryan (vice-chairman) welcomed the delegates on behalf of the Wellington branch, and mentioned the programme mapped out for their entertainment during their stay here. In his opening remarks, the President said it. was desirable that delegates should endeavour to transact the business expedi tiously, as conferences consumed a large portion of the insitute’s income. Members o* their society throughout the Dominion would be keenly watching, and hoping that the conference would result in something tangible being done in their interests, and ho exhorted the delegates to make the wisest possible decisions. From the railways point of view times had changed materially, and at present might be said to be in the transition stage, and they had yet to find out exactly where they were. The annual report and balance shcot were adopted on the motion of the president and Mr L. Barclay, the President stating during the discueoion on the matter of finance that the institute was sailing pretty close to the wind, the subscription levied on the membors being the lowest of any industrial organisation in Australia or New Zealand The remainder of the day was occupied discussing remits, dealing with salaries and the re-grading of positions, and finality in connection with that portion of the agenda paper was not reached when the conference rose.
