REST HOUSE AT OWAKA.

Under the will of the late Mr Wm. Chalmers, farmer, of Owaka Valley, the trustee (Mr John Wilkinson, Dunedin) was in structed to hold the residue of deceaseds estate in trust to purchase a site on "which to erect a resthouse for the comfort and use of country women coming into Owaka. This trust is now practically fulfilled, one of the best sites for such an institution hav ing been purchased, an elegant, up-to-date building, designed by Mr Dunning, archi tect of Dunedin, has been erected bv Mr Robert Mitchell, the contractor. On June 17 a number of ladies and gentlemen of Owaka and the country districts as sembled at the rest house at the invitation of the trustee to view the premises and un veil an enlarged photograph of the late Mr Chalmers, and also co discuss the future control an! management of the institution The invitation was largely responded to, and the premises were inspected with eaerer ethusiasm and pronounced to be all that was to be desired for such an institutioncomfort taste, and utility all having been provided for its future users. The building, which is of brick, is of handsome appearance, and consists of two main rooms, one for ladies only, and the other for ladies with children. Thefb is a most up-to date kitchenette, with ample cupboard accommodation and a hot water service. A bath room and washhand basin are also provided, and there are in addition a washhouse, coalhouse, and three lavatories. A matron and a provisional committee of management have been appointed, and it is intended that the building shall be used for the purposes of a rest-house only. A suggestion that a room should be set apart for the Plunket Nurse did not find favour with the trustee.
