FANCIERS’ SHOW.

SUCCESSFUL OPENING DAY. EXHIBITION IN CANADIAN COURT. .The Dunedin Fanciers’ Clubs], annual How of poultry, pigeons, canaries, dogs, •ats and children s pets was opened in he old Canadian Court at the Exhibition wildings on Thursday morning. The bulking proved very suitable for the purpose, md enabled all the exhibits to be set out conveniently with ample space for their display. Canaries were the cutstanding luccoss of the show, and provided the best exhibition of these popular pets that the club has yet been able to stage. The dogs made a good showing both in num bers and qualiiy, and the fancy pigeons also provided a very satisfactory display. The total number of entries in the various glasses is as follows: Poultry 265 Bantams Pigeons 250 Canaries 290 Cats 20 Pets 41 Dogs HO Total 1026 The show was visited by large numbers during the afternoon and evening, and much interest was displayed in the well arrangel show. The Forbury School Band provided bright music that was much appreciated. The show makes it evident that large numbers of people find pleasure and amusement in the interesting hobby of canary culture, and it is gratifying to the club to have such a large entry as compared with former years. Both the quality and quantity of the birds are excellent, exceeding all expect at Jons, and ‘His reflects great credit on the fanciers who are im proving each year with the different vari ties. The local club’s offer to start the stocking of a small bird aviary at the Botanical Gardens still remains good when the City Council decides to go on with the structure. In the fancy pigeon classes the general quality of the exhibits was good, although the entries were not as numerous as they have been in some previous years. The fantails made a very fine showing, and there were some really first-class birds among them. The best fancy pigeon in the show was Mr W. M. Bain’s blue turhit, which excelled in head and beak. The long faced tumblers as usual in this show were decidedly good, the best h-.m being found in this variety. Several nice magpies were shown, but they were inclined to be downfaced. There were some exceptionally fine birds in the boys’ class, and several of the exhibits here were quite good enough to he in the open class. The poultry section compares quite fav Durably with that seen in previous years in this show. The black orningtons are a very strong class, and the Rhode Islands are also good. The game birds were a feature of this section, and it is some years since such a fine display of them has been seen. Mr F. G. Hanson's winning black orpington cockerel was a very fine bird of good type It had a good head and a good colour, and the same is to be said of Mr YV. Macdonald's winning buff pullet. Mr A. Driscoll’s prize-taking Rhode Tsiand red cock was of good colour and good type and was well prepared for the show. The Black leghorns were a rather weak class. This is a breed that is iust begin oing to come to the fore again. Ihe winning hen was a good type hut hardly forward enough for show purposes. The iucks this year made a strong class, and one Indian runner was of exceptionally good type. The entries of dogs were numerous, and of good type, and the ordinary breeds like cocker spaniels and fox terriers were quite as good as in previous year', or perhaps a shade better. Mr W. Jack’s Dusky Gyp, the wire fox terrier that won the lady's bracelet, was considered by the judge to be a practically perfect specimen of the breed, and certainly as good as is to be found anywhere i" this country. Mr W Henderson’s smooth fox terrier Ttingwood that came second to him waft really first-class dog, but was just a shade too tall in proportion. "Hi o Irish setters made a very satisfactory showing. This is a breed that is improving and growing mo’o true to tvne and colour every year. Mr J. P. Smith’s deerhound bitch was an excellent specimen. The first honours rmong the pomeranians went to a bitch. Miss fJoyd’s Dandy, a splendid little K,ai*cal. Mrs Jackson Purdie’s two Mexican Chihuahuas had perfect bodies and heads but they were n lacking in the leg*. There are indentions that an increasing number of people who p T( * not strictly fanciers are taking an intelligent interest in the breeding of dogs, and the work of the- Fancier*’ Club. Mr W. Fsqnilant. the president of the club, is in charge of the whole show, with Mr G. Thomson, the secretary, as the chief executive officer. The following the list of Rwards: FANCY PIGEONS. Judge: Mr W.
