In his comments the Judge said that the Show Association was to be congratulated on the very large number of entries, which was easily a record for the Dominion. The quality of tlve butter taken from the export lines was very pleasing, and compared favourably with that in the classes of specially made butter. In regard to cheese, while the bul’t exhibits were somewhat disappointing, the chief defect in the body and texture was looseness. However, the higher scoring exhibits were close texture and firm and meaty in body. The finish of the cheese generally was neat and attractive. June 1. The Waikato Winter Show was ipene.l today in beautiful weather by the Prime Minister. The attendance was arge Mr Coates referred to the value of such exhibitions, and to the excellent display of agricultural produce, which afforded a fapl.:ndid demonstration of the special feature j of the Auckland provincial district, especially of Waikato. Speaking generally of the agricultural industry, Mr Coates said the past season had been unsatisfactory from a climatic point of view. There had been a late rpring and a drought in Hawke’s Bay, the East Coast, and Marlborough, although the conditions in Auckland, Taranaki, and Canterbury had been better. The chief features of the agricultural year had been the substantial increase in sheep, a decline fn the production of butter, and a shrinkage !n the number of cattle. The features of the markets were a fall in the values of wool, lamb, and marton, with a less decline ui butter and cheese.
