PATRIOTISM DEFINED.
ROMAN CATHOLIC VIEW. AUCKLAND, June 1. A definition of patriotism was given by Bishop Cleary in an address at a Roman Catholic function last evening. "Patriotism is now in the air, often in an undefined and confused way," he said. "Four years ago I stood by a spot in Brussells J where Nime Cavell made her last and greatest sacrifice. Among the dying words i of that great woman were these: 'Stand- j ing as I do in view' of God and eternity, J 1 realise that patriotism is not enough.’ "A vague and fuzzy patriotism is not enough. You must get your patriotism tho right side up and set it upon its true foundations. There are probably many who have little idea that in our education system and church life patriotism is built up on its only solid and permanent basis. In and out ot our schools love of country is an act of religion,’ and its rock foundation is the teaching ol St. Paul: ‘That all power is from God; that authority m civil government comes from Him; that obedience to it is a matter of religion and conscience, an ordinary part of our service to our Creator.’ ”
