LOAD-LINE SUBMERGED.
A CAPTAIN FIXED. " - NEW PLYMOUTH, June 8. ' In the Magistrate’s Court this morning, Captain Lapping, who is in command of the schooner Margaret F. Sterling, was fined £25 for bringing the vessel into port with the load-line submerged. Captain Lapping pleaded guilty, but excused himself on the ground that the law was not known in America. He also produced a certificate given by the Board of Marine Underwriters at San Francisco. The vessel arrived here on May 28, but has not begun to discharge because the captain’s credit has not arrived and the crew’s wages cannot be paid. It is understood that on two occasions during the voyage from Tacoma to Puget Sound a portion of the deck cargo of lumber had to be jettisoned. The captain expects to have his credit established before Monday, and to commence discharge then. The vessel was formerly named the Vancouver.
