It is interesting to know that it runs back to the dawn of Asiatio history, and wa« instituted to prevent the inter-mixture of the fair Aryan race with the dark-skinned aborigines of the peninsula now known as India. From this original caste, the simple drawing of a colour developed four recognised divisions which were in operation for some considerable time. During the course of ages, however, caste expanded into minute subdivisions, almost past counting. About 1909. for instance, in Madras alone there were nearly 4COO minor distinctions. The Indian army hockey team, which will visit Dunedin in less than three weeks, is drawn from a wide area, and it includes many different religions and castes. The native members of the team partake of sneciallycooked food, a great amount of trouble having been taken by the Indian Army control to respect theie ancient rights and customs. WELLINGTON EASILY DEFEATED. WELLINGTON, June 2. The Indian Army hockey team was given a civic reception Captain Cowan, in responding. expressed pleasure at the familiar topography of the city’s Himalayan acclivities. WELLINGTON. June 3. An 'enormous crowd, estimated at 15,000. assembled this afternoon to see the Indian team play hockey against a Wellington team, which included some English officers, looked very smart in red shirts and stockings and white half-pants. The visitors were in the pink of condition, and outlasted the Wellington men. At the outset. Wellington attacked strongly ami scored the first goal. Then the Indians commenced, and by half-time their score was 5 to 1. They are a very fast team, and show wonderful combination and judgment. Once /they get the ball inside the circle their shots at goal go in like lightning. In the finer points of the game they quite outclassed Wellington. The final score was 8 goals to 3 in their favour, and no doubt it would have been greater had they played the match on a hard, dry ground. The large crowd of onlookers was keenly interested and warmly cheered the visitors. EASY WIN AT NELSON. ■ NELSON, June 5. Splendid weather conditions prevailed for the hotkey match between the Indian Army team and Nelson. 'lhe attendance was between 3000 and 4000. The visitors won by 9 to nil after giving a better all round display than the local players. Their finished stick work in the circle nonplussed their opponent-, and but for fine goalkeeping the score would have been about doubled. The Indians scored within the first fne minutes, and when the whistie sounded at half time were leading by 5 goals. In the first 20 minutes of the second half the Nelson players more than held their own. but were unable to pierce the defence. In the last 10 minutes the visitors put on four more goals as the result of fine combined work. The Nelson players battled hard but were unable to do anything against a vastly superior combination. Belchamber 2 goals. Cox 3, and Dhian Chand 4 were the scorers. TEAMS FOR TRIAL MATCH. The following are selected for a trial match on the Oval next Saturday.— Block.—Twose, Munro, Fleet, Butler, Barrett, H. Maya ton, Smith, luLon, Woodfield, Johnston, C. Mayston.
