CRITICISM RESENTED.
SANITATION AT RAT AN A. HEALTH OFFICER’S DEMANDS GRANTED. WANGANUI, May 31. Ratana is not over-pleased with the strictures recently cast on his pa by Dr M’Kibbin. Ite contends that an official of the Health Department came and partook of the hospitality of the Natives, and everything he asked, even to innoculation, wa3 acceded to. except, of course, providing a water supply that would meet all requirements. The unfortunate part is that the population justifies the conversion of the Ratana township into a borough, but if this were done it would mean that the Maori community enterprise would be ended, and pakehas could not be prevented from coming in and establishing trading However, the Prime Minister is to be approached on the matter and an effort made to secure special legislation to conserve the rights now enjoyed. The erection of the Ratana Temple, the foundation stone of which was laid at Easter time, is now under way, close on 100 men being engaged. The building is expected to be ready for opening at Christmas.
