AN EXCITING ENCOUNTER.
ANGLER LANDS STINGRAY. AUCKLAND, May 26. The steward of the steamer Maunganui, uhile fishing from the vessel last evening, was much astonished to discover had hooked a ' gray weighing over 2cwt. The steamer was lying at Princes wharf, and the angler was hoping for nothing bigger than a selinapper. Ilis amazement was great when it was indicated by tho Ration at the '•* , *«»* end of the line that he lia' 1 <>dked mueh m exciting. The stinr-°v made a bva\ struggle for over an hour, and the marvel is that an ordinary schnapper line he* against such a formidable strain. When ti ina—monster was triumphantl hauled aboard he was found to measure 6ft Gin in length and 4ft Gin from flapper vo flapper. Ilis businesslike sting was unusually long, and the steward has decided to retain it as a souvenir of ai exciting encounter.
