BUY BRITISH GOODS.
NEW ZEALAND’S RESPONSIBILITY. THE PRIME MINISTER’S ADVICE. (From Our Own Correspondent) AUCKLAND, May 27. Speaking at a smoke concert at Pio Pia last evening the Prime Minister and the Minister of Lands went to special pains to emphasise again the need for ‘buying British goods. In a speech, which was characterised by Mr M'Lecd as one of the best he had ever heard, the Prime Minister make, Mr Coates said that, while it was up to the Government to do everything possible for New Zealanders, he responsibility devolved upon out own people to support the Motherland. The bulk of our produce, he said, went to Britain and we should support her by buying her goods Britain was recognising her liabilities and paying them in style. That made one proud to be a Britisher. Our problems were small when compared with those of the Homeland. Mr Coates said he did not want all the talk about British goods to become merely platitudes,-“If you can’t buy New Zealand goods buy British goods, or goods made within the Empire.” He concluded: "It is really wonderful what the Old Land is doing in paying off her debts as well as helping her dominions overseas with large sums of money.” ‘‘l thoroughly agree with all the Prime Minister has said and cannot emphasise too strongly that we should buy British goods”, said Mr M‘Leod. “Let us remember this whether we are buying only a box of matches or a motor car, and let me tell you this, that if conditions ever arose in Britain when tho old mother lion had to say ‘Well youngsters I can’t lend you any more, I’ve done all I can for you,’ we would be up against it in this country, and up against it harder than we have ever been before.”
