CENSUS FIGURES.
WEI.IN'GTON, May 25. Preliminary census figures relating to the jjopuiation of Wellington City were made available this afternoon. They show that the population of the city this census was 97,986 as against 88,920 in 1921, an increase of 9066. The Gisborne borough’s population shows an increase of 1946—■ from 10,931 in 1921 to 12,877. May 29. t The census returns show that the population of Auckland city is 87,829, an increase of 6117. The population of Hutt County, which has been altered by the exclusion of the new Upper Hutt Borough, is 6681, an increase of 28. Including the borough, the Hutt County shows an increase of about 43 per cent. OTAGO TOTALS. The following figures relating to the recent census have been submitted to the Cromwell Argus by the local census enumerator (Mr W. R. Mackenzie):— Cromwell 606, Alexandra 610, township of Clyde 283. Tho following census returns were supplied by the Dunedin Post Office on Thursday : Mosgiel Borough.—92l males. 1012 females, 7 Maoris; total, 1940. Last census, 1762. Peninsula County.—l 236 males, 1183 females, 67 Maoris; total, 2491. Last census, 1783. Taieri County.—3o27 males. 2600 females, 5 ' Maoris; total, 5632. Last census (1921). 5715. Waikouaiti County.—222C males, 2041 females, 74 Maoris; total, 4341. Last census, 4179. West Harbour Borough.—974 males, 1017 females; total, 1991. Last census. 1696. BOROUGHS AND COUNTIES. The following statement brings together the returns for the whole census district for which Mr F. W. Penlington is chief enumerator, with the exception of Dunedin City, the figures tor which will v be available in a day or two:
NORTH OTAGO FIGURES. WELLINGTON, May 28. Further census figures show the population of Oamaru borough as 6995 (increase 1266), Hampden borough 255 (decrease 49), Waitaki country 9355 (decrease 1017). Ihese changes in population have, however, been to some extent influenced by an alteration in the boundaries. . AUCKLAND’S INCREASE. AUCKLAND, May 28. Incomplete census returns show an increase of about 30 per cent, in the Auckland metropolitan area. Those for the provincial towns and town districts show less than 10 per cent, increase. The counties show an increase of about 16 per cent. If the rate of increase is-main-tained in the returns to come the population of the province would be 443,000, against the 1925 estimate of 441,921, slightly less than one-third of the whole European population of New Zealand.
