BRUCE COUNTY COUNCIL

The final meeting for the year of the Bruce County Council was held on Tuesday, the chairman (Or Thos. Scott) occupying the chair. There were also present Crs D. M‘Gregor, Jasper Clark, H. M. Driver, T. Johnston. W. J. Sheat, D. Gardyne, A. Renton, \V. Bell, Adam King, and V. W ilson. FINANCE. Accounts amounting to £1571 15s 7d were passed for payment. - CORRESPONDENCE. Mr Jas. M’Granther (Clarendon) wrote drawing attention to the state of tne ro&d leading to his property, and asking that repairs should be put in hand as soon as possible.—lt was decided that the necessary repairs should be effected forthwith. A letter was received from the Stirling Dairy Factory Co. (Ltd.) requesting permission to erect a kerbside petrol pump at its factory.—Permission was granted. A request that the council should continue its payments as in the past was received from the secretary of the South Otago Hospital Board. It was stated that the board’s estimates for the current year* were practically the same as for last, with the exception of a slight increase of £ll9 15s 6d in the total of the proposed levy, but it was pointed out that this should not materially affect the council's levy unless there should be an increase in its valuation out of proportion to that of the other contributing bodies.—Received. A letter was received from Messrs Moore, Moore, and Nicliol (Dunedin) stating that Messrs Morrison Bros., of Kaitangata, wished to 'reopen their coal mine and requesting the council tc consider having the road to the mine put in order. It was stated that the Mines Department was prepared to a sist to the extent of £9O, and it was hoped that the council would contribute a like sum.—Cr Johnston said that some £2OO had alreadybeen spent on this road, which was probably the reason that Messrs Morrison Bros, wished to use it. He pointed out that at the present time heavy lorries would cut the surface badly.—lt was decided to inform Messrs Moore. Moore, and Nicliol that the county had no further funds available fo. this road and that if coal were to be carted on it that the heavy traffic by-laws would immediately be brought into force. In connection with this matter, a deputation, consisting of Messrs Morrison Bros, and Heycock, approached the council with a view to coming to a satisfactory arrangement in regard to having the road put in order. The spokesman pointed out that all local deliveries would be made by ton truck, and that the company would be agreeable to regravel the surface.—lt was i decided that Crs Johnstm and Renton be appointed to meet the company's representatives on the ground and to report to the next meeting of the council. HIGHWAY MATTERS. The Chairman, No. 17 District Highways Council, wrote submitting a design for the proposed sign for maiking the spot where the highway crossed county boundaries.—Received. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The inspector’s report for the month of April was as follows: Balmoral No. 1 Riding.—Maintenance metal had been put down on a portion of the Newton-Greenfield road, and gravel on the Tuapeka Mouth road. Cairn road and Tuapeka Mouth to Newton metalling contracts were making satisfactory progress. Balmoral No. 2 Riding.—Maintenance metal had been put down on the Gooseneck road, and some free grading done on the Blackburn to Hillend road. The broken planks had been replaced in the Balmoral Creek bridge on the Riverside road. Crichton Riding.—A small stone and wooden bridge on Hewitson’s road had been replaced by a culvert of 30-inch concrete pipes, and a 9-inch culvert put in at Hall’s barn. A portion of the stone wall under the small bridge near Lovell’s Flat Hall had been taken down and rebuilt, and the ends of the concrete culvert near the railway line had been protected with concrete. Maintenance gravel had been put down on the School road. Matau Riding.—Maintenance gravel had been put down on the Swamp road. The water-tables had been cleaned out on. the Stirling Hill road, and the high sides taken off in places. Inch Clutha Riding.—The grader had been working on Lockhead’s road during the month. Kaitangata Riding.—The metalling contract on Kaitangata-Wangaloa road had been completed The stone wall of a small bridge on the Waronui-Coombe Hay road collapsed, and the bridge had been replaced with a culvert of four feet concrete pipeß. A 9in culvert had been put in near Sally’s Gully Greek, and a gravel pit opened at Waronui for gravelling on the Coombe Hay road. Glenledi Riding.—Maintenance metal had been put down on a portion of Coast road; reforming work done on Kerr’s road, and surfacework on Akatore Coast road. Waihola Riding.—The scrub had been cut back on a portion of the road between Taieri Mouth and Round Hill, and the road to Taieri Mouth bridge repaired. Clarendon Riding.—A portion of the Clarondon-Berwick road between Tuft’s and the embankment had been made up with clay, and maintenance metal put down between Boundary Creek and the bridge. Toko Riding.—The metalling contract on Farquharson’s road had been completed. Maintenance metal had been put down on the Tokoiti to Milburn road, Tokoiti Settlement road, also between Dunn’s Bridge and the railway. A coat of metal had been put down on the short road leading to the Fairfax railway siding. Mt. Stuart Riding.—The new metalling on Table Hill road had been raked in and partly blinded. The surfacemen throughout the county had been employed on general surface work, bridge repairs, and new culverts during the month. MAIN HIGHWAYS. Dunedin to Invercargill.—Four hundred and sixty tons of Taratu gravel had been put down between Clarksville and Bon Accord. Two teams and six men had been quarrying, carting out, and breaking metal between Stony Creek road and Balclutha Clarksville to Alexandra.—Eight hundred and seventeen yards of gravel had been put down between Pighunters road and Manuka Creek. Twenty men had been employed on main highways and had worked a total of 357£ days during the month of April. Th« report was adopted.

RANGER’S REPORT

The Ranger reported that 25 cattle, two sheep, and eight horses had been impounded during the month.
