LAWN TENNIS. THE DAVIS CUP. LONDON, May 3. South Africa defeated Portugal in the first round of the Davis Cup, winning three of the first four matches. They will meet Australia in the second round. SECOND ROUND OF DAVIS CUP. LONDON, May 8. Britain beat Poland in the second round of the Davis Cup contests. Turnbull beat Kleinadel, 6—l, 7—5, 6—o. Wheatley beat Czetwertnyskie, 6 —4, 6—3, 6—4. SWIMMING. ANNUAL COLLEGE RELAY RACE. There was a large attendance of pupils and friends of the various girls’ colleges on Wednesday afternoon at the Municipal Baths to witness the annual contest for the four-a-side relay shield, over a distance of 133 1-3 yards. At the start the girls took the water in fine style. The end of the first lap saw Archerfield with a slight lead, while the Girls’ High School, St. Dominic’s, and Columba touched together. St. Hilda’s were some yards behind. In the second lap Archerfield lost the lead to the Girls' Hign School by some five yards, with St. Dominic’s a close third, Columba next, and St. Hilda’s well back. On the completion of the third lap the teams closed up a bit, but High School still held the lead. Archerfield gradually closed on High School, but failed to win by softie six inches, the result being: High School 1, Archerfield 2, St. Dominic's 3, Columba 4 V St. Hilda's 5 The Girls’ High School retains the shield for another year. The relay was won in th<’ fast time of 94sec, which is a Dunedin collegi record, the beat previous time being 115 see by the Girls’ High School last year. The wii ning team’s average per girl for the 33 yard 9 was a little under 24sec, which is a marked improvement all round in this branch of college sport. Mr Tom Hughes and G. Westwood acted as judges. Mr Henderßon, who presented the shield, referred to the marked improvement the girls had shown this year. Mr E. H. Olds, the instructer to the colleges, acted as starter. NEW ZEALAND LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP. AUCKLAND, May 7. The New Zealand ladies’ golf championship is to be hfild on the Balmacewen Links at Dunedin, from October 15 to October 21. The Coronation Medal (home links match) is to be played during the last week in May. Conditions: Handicap medal play; handicaps from scratch to 20 (L.G.U.).

OTAGO HUNT. The Otago Hunt Club was favoured with beautiful weather for its opening meet, which was held on Saturday afternoon over the property 6f Mr Thos. Patterson at “Bodeaton.” Over 100 spectators, who had mostly motored up, witnessed a good exhibition of jumping for so early in the season. The run of about five miles which extended almost to Green Island beach over undulating country, consisting of post and rail, single and double brushes, provided excellent sport, and was much enjoyed by those following. The club’s new Huntsman (H. Shine) and Whip (G. J. Harrington), were out for thoir first time, and carried out their respective duties well. The hounds, although a small pack, worked very well until nearing Green Island beach, where they lost the trail and gave a bit of trouble, but apart from that they worked quite satisfactorily. At the conclusion of tne run those present were invited to partake of most enjoyable afternoon tea, which was provided by the club’s president (Mr B. 8. Irwin) in an adjoining paddock. A most enjoyable afternoon concluded when Mr A. W. Brown (in the absence of the president, who was called out of town) thanked those present for their attendance. Mr Patterson, who has placed his property at the club’s disposal at any time, and Mr Irwin, for providing the afternoon" tea, were also thanked. Among those follow-
