The cricket write* of The Times, commenting on the match, says: “Collins was not merely slow, but he was timorous and this odious adjective not unfairly describes most of the Australian batting. The only rational explanation is the lack of practice.” THE ESSEX MATCH. LONDON, May' 7. Thl weather was cold, dull, and showery when Australia, with eight wickets down for 532, resumed their innings. The match did not start till noon. The wicket was-easy. A heavy downpour at 4 o’clock rendered further play impossible, and the match was abandoned. Essex lost two wickets for five, Gregory taking three, and Hendry noue for two. Scores: AUSTRALIA. LONDON, May 8. Everett, Mailey, Ponsford, Andrews, and Ellia are standing out of the ''ustralian team in the match against Surrey. Very heavy rain fell during the night, but it’was fine in the morning. The wicket was soft and the start was delayed. Large crowds besieged the entrances and were not allowed in the grounds till it waa de : finitely decided to play. Collins won the toss and play commenced at 12.30 p.m., with an attendance of 10,000. At» i conference between the New South Wales, Victorian, and South Australian Cricket Associations it was decided to admit Queensland to the Sheffield Shield competition, and also to play ut all Sheffield 'Shield matches, and to leave the question of covering the wickets to the individual States.
COUNTY MATCHES. LONDON, May 4. The match between Surrey and Hampshire was drawn. Surrey made 248 runs in their first innings (Sandham 61 and J&rdine 79). and declared their second innings closed with three wickets down for 145 (Sandham 84). Hampshire’s first innings yielded 182 runs (Rowell 97) Fender took four wickets for 60 runs. In their second innings they made 118 runs for the lpss of four wickets. Yorkshire defeated Essex by 10 wickets In their first innings Yorkshire compiled 359 runs (Rhodes 132, Oldroyd 65, and Waddington 55). In their second innings they made six runs without losing a wicket. Essex made 110 tuns in their first innings, in which Kilner took six wickets for 43 runs and Macaulav four for 50. In their second innings they made 254 runs (Perrin 59). Kilner took four wickets for 73 runs. The game between Cambridge and Middle sex was abandoned. Cambridge made 89 runs in their first innings and Middle sex made 223. (Hendren 49). Playing for Notts against Northants Richmond took five wickets for 29 runs and Larwood five for 55. For Northants Jupp took six for 47. Notts won. For Warwick against Lancashire Quaife took 4 wickets for 15 runs and for Lancashire M‘Donald took five for 55. The match was drawn. May 7 All cricket matches were abandoned Swing to the rain. For Surrey against Glamorgan Shepherd made 117. Fenley took eight wickets lor 69. For Glamorgan Parkin took five wickets for 76.
