GROWTH OF SYDNEY.
THE CITY’S HUB. (From Otjb Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY, April 14. Time and circumstances change in a wonderfully fascinating way the hub of a big city. Thirty years ago the foreshores of the harbour and up as far as Bridge street, which is now the neighbourhood of the shipping offices, constituted the commercial pivot of Sydney. It was not long, however, before the General Poet Office became the pivotal point of the sity’s activities. Round about .t there sprang up a cluster of commercial bouses whose names are now landmarks in the city history. So Sydney’s hub has changed its location from place to place, until with the evolution of growth, and the completion of the harbour bridge, and the underground railway it is not at all improbable that Liverpool street, in the gradual progression from the Quay to the Central Railway Station, will be the hub of the city in a year or two. It is in the neighbourhood of Liverpool street, whose environs are gradually being transformed, that one' of the main underground stations will be located. The bridge, in common with the railway, will give Liverpool street a new standing for they will both serve to transport right through, or beneath the city, shoppers from the northern side of the harbour. Although the progress of it is not very apparent, the work of constructing the bridge is proceeding so rapidly that it is expected that the first, section of 238 feet will be ready for erection in June. Ten massive spans are to be erected simultaneously five from each side of the harbour. to meet at the main arch. There will be two long spans of 238 feet and eight, each of about 714 feet. Excavations are now being made for the main piers.
