ELECTRIC LINE POLES.

PROVISION FOR THE FUTURE. PLANTING OF HARDWOODS SUGGESTED. (From Ocb Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, April 27. The Minister of Agriculture suggests that electric power boards, local bodies, and farmers should plant hardwoods on aTeas of deteriorated lands in order that the trees may in years to come be utilised as poles for carrying electric lines, and at the same time act as a means of keeping down noxious weeds until the time comes for the replacement of the present hardwood poles. The Hon Mr Hawken says: “We do not want to be in the position of having to buy poles from outside the Dominion. It is unnecessary to go outside the Dominion for new poles, because hardwoods can be grown quite satisfactorily for this purpose within New Zealand.’’ Mr Hawken said that there was plenty of land in most districts—certainly in the North Island—which could be used very profitably in the production of hardwoods.
