PUBLICATIONS RECEIVED.
There are some fine articles in the May issue of Life. “WSffcJi Is the HapLand?” discusses the merits of three, varieties of British stock and tlieir characteristics; “The Intimate Letters of a Great Queen” deals with the correspondence of the late Queen Victoria; and “Brains—Are They Necessary?” is a humorous discourse on a serious subject. There are several very good short stories, including “Skipper Horsham and Sandy Mac: How They Made a Bargain in Ships,” and news of the world from every point of view to interest all readers. * * * VVe have received from the Triad Magazine of Australia, Limited, a copy of its new publication, Cobbers, a fortnightly for young’Australians. Cobbers is turned out in the same lavish style as is the Triad Magazine. The illustrations to the boys’ and girls’ serial stories have been done by some of the finest artists in Australia. We are pleased to note that Australian authors and artists have been exclusively employed. In addition to the serials there are. numerous other departments, such as hobbies, puzzle pages, competitions for young folk ranging from six to fifteen years of age. The tots have not been forgotten; tlieir section contains fairy stories illustrated by Pixie O. Harris. Perhaps what will prove the most popular feature of all is the comic character, “Tibby,” created especially for Cobbers by the brilliant young Australian black and white artist, Reginald Coulter. Liberal cash prizes are offered for stories, essays, poems, and drawings sent in by Australian school children. We can honestly recommend this’ magazine as the best of its sort ypt produced by an Australian publisher.
