AUCKLAND TOPICS.

By

DIGGER.

Although the Great Northern Steeplechase meeting is yet a month off, there are great signs of activity among the jumping brigade, each morning seeing a newcomer in this department, aud at "The conclusion of the Waikato fixture all eyes will be centred on the jumping brigade. Already northerners are discussing the possibilities of the candidates for the big June double. Sir Rosebery had two races at Whangarei, and showed that he is well forward by a sterling effort for a ’chaser behind Nippy in the Mclnnes Memorial on the second day. It was only by a narrow margin that Sir Rosebery suffered defeat, and as Nippy is a much improved galloper, there was merit in the performance of Garrett’s charge. Since racing at Whangarei Sir Rosebery has schooled splendidly and is now in favour for the big events. Last years fine performer, Llewellyn, has not had a race since being brought in, but the big fellow is in great heart and is galloping and jumping as well as ever. So far he has not been sent over the hill, but during the next week or two he will have plenty of opportunities of showing his ability. Llewellyn is a fine weight carrier, and it would seem merely a matter of soundness for him to do even better than he did last season. He has not given any indication that he is other than a thoroughly sound horse. Among the maiden hurdlers being schooled at Ellerslie art Brushwood Boy. Bizarro, Tapulii, Kamehameha, Some Bother, Hangawera, Eton Town, and Zircon. and as yet none can be said to impress as beyond the ordinary. Zircon, who has already raced over hurdles, is at this juncture the best in his schooling tasks, but Tapulii, who has nothing to his credit on the flat, has taken to the new game with some aptitude. Some Bother has so far shown little speed, but he is a fine fencer, having had previous experience in the hunting field. E. Rae has Glenotus and Vociferate in steady work, and both will have raced at Te Rapa before you read these notes. The former, who jumps with all his out dash, was expected to race better than Vociferate, but unless a few others with m_»re seasoning had made mistakes, Ellerslie watchers did not expect him to win. Glenotus is troubled with his tendons, and it will take his trainer all his time to get him through the winter fixtures. Vociferate at no stage of his career was anything but a plodder with average fencing ability. I have always thought that jumping w s Knighthood's game. N. Cunningham lias been schooling the imported gelding during the last week or two, and h has i riably acquitted himself well. Knighthood was to race over hurdles at Te Rapa on Saturday, and it needed only a satisfactory performance at the Waikato tra ’ to bring him into strong favour for the Great Northern Hurdles. He is a good stayer. Flowing Bowl lias been going a long time without making much headway over hurdles, and that is usually a bad sign. However, Conway’s charge has schooled splendidly on more than one occasion, in company with Llewellyn jf late, and it is just possible that he may strike some form during the coming winter meetings. Royal Fame has up to date been quite a moderate performer, but. C. Coleman has -iven him a solid preparation over' the schooling hurdles and a little practice over the big fences in the centre at Ellerslie. Royal Fame has done well at each try out, and is a likely winner of hack steeplechases during the winter. Tuki was another of the proved ’chasers to be set down for competition at Te Rapa, so that j T ou will know how he has performed ere this. Tuki has come on rapidly during the last few weeks, and with a couple of races at Te Rapa should be well conditioned when the A.R.C. Steeplechase fixtures come up for decision. Two experienced jumpers, Penniless and Pittsworth, are performing their schooling tasfts very proficiently at headquarters. The foymer may require a race to put him right, but Pittsworth, who was backward at the Ellerslie Autumn fixture, was expected to do better at Te Rapa. He fenced very dashingly over the big fences on the flat at Ellerslie last Tuesday. Other ’chasers who have been recommissioned at Ellerslie are Bustler and Esplanade. The latter at his best was just up to fair hack steeplechase form, but Bustler, who has always been unsound, is a first-class ’chaser. Unfortunatel. his trainer has never been able to thoroughly string him up for a big steeplechase. Chairman and Serang fulfilled their earlier promise at Whangarei, and both were expected to run prominently at Te frapa. They are as fit a pair as you o Id find in the country, and are worth following. Both possess that attribute so useful when big fields are competing—the ability to go fast from the barrier. Te Monanui, who raced unsuccessfully in Australia, and a yearling filly by Allegory arrived in Auckland from Sydney on Tuesda.. and were reshipped to New Plymouth on Thursday. If Town Bank fails at Te Rapa, bear him in mind for future events, for be

is a proved galloper under Avinter conditions. Should he not get in the money over the week-end Aucklaud backers would find his failures costly. J. Williamson will take a team to Sydney after the A.R.C. Winter meeting. Probable members of the team are Clarus, Newbury, and Pittsworth. At the same time Norma Talmadge, who has proved a failure here, will be returned to Sydney.

RACINC IN NEW ZEALAND.

FORBURY PARK MEETING. First Day—Friday, April 30. The inspiration which moved the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s winter meeting into the final week of the Exhibition bore great fruit. Not only did it result in one of the largest attendances ever seen at the track, but it provided an interest of particularly good racing, which stands sure to win new adherents to the large and ever-growing ranks of followers of lightharness racing. The morning broke dull and uninviting, and mild showers fell, but nevertheless it did not deter one of the greatest musters of sports ever seen from assembling at Forbury Park. The dull and heavy weather resulted in a dead track, which provided fail but not fast going. The card for the day supplied some particularly interesting racing, and the majority of events required some winning. There was, however, no doubt that Native Chief outclassed the field in the Prince o’ Wales Handicap. He lost ground at the start, but over the last halfmile stepped so well as to Avin easing up at the finish. Native Chief won so Avell as to suggest without much diffidence that he is in with the front-rank pacers, and will be unlucky if he does not qualify for the New Zealand TrottL.g Cup. The totalisator showed a great increase on the turnover for the first day last year. For the first day of the winter meeting, 1925, £24,476 10s was handled by the totalisator, as against £40.047 10s for yesterday, an advance of £15.571. The rain which fell through Friday night and again on Saturday morning left the track in a very heavy stabs, and under the circumstances the times recorded cannot but be regarded as very good. As a matter of fact, some excellent racing was witnessed, and (He mannor in which the drivers handled their horses in the heavy

going, when the fields had closed up, is worthy of special mention. The South Canterbury Jockey Club opened its meeting in fine weather, and the attendance seemed to bo about on a par with the usual muster on the Washdyke racecourse. Rain, which fell overnight, put the track in good going order, and the racing proved to be rather interesting.
