The Making of Otago Harbour.

In September, 1884, the construction of the Western Mole was commenced. The mole was built from the Spit to a point 4088 feet outside the Heads, the total cost of the superstructure being £22,000. The object was to deflect the ebb tide against the sand bank, and so scour the channel. The mole accomplished its purpose, but the superstructure has largely disappeared. It has now been decided to rebuild the superstructure and to raise the stone wall to high-water mark.
