BATTLEFIELD MEMORIALS.
AN ILLUSTRATED LECTURE. A very interesting illustrated lecture was delivered in Bums Hpll on Ihursday - by Mr si. Hurst Seager to a rathei limited Quniber of pet sons. The pictures wefo mainly of memorials erected at Gallipoli and m various parts of France, ana necessarily gave a fairly good idea of tba rough character, of the peninsula and of the beautiful feitile country of the Frencc people. 'The lecture was given under the auspices of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, and was really an extension of % similar lecture given by Mr Seager recently. The subject Mr Seager had to handle wa* of a sombre and someyhut yad kind, but was nevertheless exceedingly interesting. The memorials ereeteci on th* hills of Gallipoli, even m phorogrnphio form, ware very impressive, and many ot them are evidently very fine and imposing structures. Those in various parts of France were equally so, the material dif- t ference being the surroundings Amongst , the- most interesting of the* depictions wefo , several of the magnificent cathedra 1 of ; Amiens, of which several views of the in- J terior and exterior were shown. Quito, a number of views m and about the French town of Le Quesnoy. which was wrested from the .Germans by the New Zealanders, were placed upon the screen, the identical spot where the relieving natty scaled the high wall being shown. Indeed, Le Qnesnoy provided a very large proportion of the scenes placed before those present. I’ha New Zealand garden in Le Quesnoy, dedicated to the memory of the New landers, was shown in its earlier and in its present conditions, and it was evident from the great attention and cire bestowed that those who had come to the rescue in time of distress have not been forgotten by the inhabitants of the town The huge sculptured memorial, with its fine carvings., which has been placed near the spot where tho storming party effected an entrance* was a feature of thp pictures Ihe d«scrintive remarks and commentaries nndo bv Mr Setger proved very interesting Mr Seacer was accorded a vote of thanks at. the'conclusion of the lecture. Mr Simpson operated the lantern. j
