CITY ESTIMATES.

INCREASED ESTIMATED INCOME. Pursuant to the provisions of “The Municipal Corporations’ Act,” it is necessary that council should approve the estimates, receipts, and expenditure of tho genera! account before striking the rates for the current year. The Finance Committee is accordingly submitting a statement to the council for approval. The total estimated income of the general account for the current year, basing the general rate on the same figure that was collected last year, is £179,397. in comparison with last year’s income of £166,224A few of the other salient features of the statement may be shown as follows: (1) Increase in rate revenue due to advances in the valuation. £8279. (2) Increase in transfer from trading accounts, £6090 (3) Increase outgo on public works expenditure. £4OOO (4) Increase in interest and sinking fund charges, £9175. (5) Increase in items of expenditure classed “miscellaneous,” £2822. Among the special items that have engaged attention is the sum of £3OO, which amount the committee recommends os a grant to the special fund now being raised for the Y.M.C.A. and Y.NV.C.A. appeal. The committee recommends that the following rates and charges be duly levied tor the current financial year: General rate, 2s Id: water rate, 9d; hospital rate, 4Jd; Drainage , Board rate, Is Ud. Total, 4s 4d Last year’s figures were: General rate, 2s Id; water rate, 9d; hospital rate. sd: Dra’nage Board rate, Is Id- Total, 4s 4d. The sanitary fee still to be imposed on tho relatively few premises calling for this service must he advanced from 25s to 26s to provide sufficient income to cover the cost owing to the reduced number to be dealt with.
