NATIVE BIRDS.

INCREASE IN NELSON. WELLINGTON, April 19. in a report furnished to the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. R. F. Bollard), Mr It. E. Clouston, caretaker of the GouJand Downs sanctury in the Nelson district, states that kiwis have considerably increased in numbers during the oast season. “Besides the kiwi,” says Mr Clouston, “the smaller birds, including the small yellow-headed parakeet, have increased. The last mentioned bird has been very rare in this district for the last 20 years. Forty years ago the yellow-headed parakeet came to the district in thousands, but the native rat (kiore) caused great havoc among the voung birds.” The caretaker says the native rat is again appearing, and on examining several of the birds’ nests he found rats in them.
