GROWTH OF AUCKLAND.
NEW CIVIC CENTRE. AUCKLAND, April 21. A Special Committee of the Auckland City Council has prepared an entirely new scheme for a civic centre of the crown of the hill in Princes street, utilising portion of Albert Park and other city-owned lands, while using the. vacant area in Queen street, known as the Civic square, for revenue purposes to finance the scheme, which involves an estimated expenditure of about £1,000,000. This amount includes a large sum for leases on the Princes street frontage of .ark street. Opposite the arts building cf the University it is proposed to place a spacious art gallery and a municipal administrative block. It is understood that there will be no diminution of the park area, so this point of the scheme will meet the city’s needs for several years ; but the complete scheme contemplates the acquisition of property on the eastern side of Princes street and the erectiou cf a large building containing a huge town lial. and a suite of smaller halls. A wide, open space would be provided for great gatherings of cititens, and lawns, and gardens, these being really an extension of Albert Park.
