EXTENDED TO BALCLCTHA. SWITCHING ON CEREMONY. The streets of Bslcluth* were electrically lighted for the first time on Wednesday night, the transition from darkness to light Hein? mode the occasion of s little ceremony which took place at a transformer station facing the main street at 7.30, when Q»e lisrht was switched on by the Mayoress (Mrs S. V White) in the presence of a gathering of between 400 and 500 persons. Eighty-two electric lamps are used, ranging from 100 candle-power to the 250 candlepower arc lamp* strung across the main street The Mayor (Mr White), in the course of a speech, aaid that IHe Borough Council hoped in time to aee Balclutha the best-lighted country town in Otago, or indeed in tha South Island. Other speekers were Messrs Jasper Clark, A. F. Aldridge. F - Carson (representing the Power Board), and Mr. F. Waite, M.P. for Cluths. Mr Clark paid a tribute to the help rendered by the Otago Exoanaioa League in bringing about the formation of the Power Board, which had had to fight against many difficulties At the conclusion of the function the Mayor and Mayoress entertained about 66 guests at eupper in the Dalton Hell. The street lamps were kept lighted ell night im honour of the ooeesiom.
