HARASSED OFFICIAL.
SCHOOL MEDICAL INSPECTIONS. CHRISTCHURCH, April 23.
Evidently the School of Medical Officers chafe under the limitations of their powers, for one in a report of a visit to the schools of Hokitika ended up V.y saying: “One sometimes sighs for a little martial law.” The following is a copy of the officer’s report: ‘‘ln Hokitika with the aid of a final year medical student I tested the Hokitika infant school with a view to ascertaining their susceptibility to diphtheria. Nearly one-third of the parents refused permission for the test, but of 41 children who were thus tested 18 were found highly susceptible to diphtheria Eleven were partially protected, and but 12 were adequately protected. As soon as time can be found I hope to complete this work by giving the protective inoculations or vaccinations, but, as the protective inoculations have to be spread over three weeks it is a little difficult to arrange so long a visit yet. Hokitika, had 55 cases of diphtheria last year with five tracheotomies, and if one were able to inoculate the school population one could guarantee Hokitika against another diphtheria outbreak for five years.”
