SWELTERING HEAT.
SYDNEY, March 3. For weeks Sydneysiders were sweltering in heat ranging from the 90’s to as high as 107, but, with the surf at their front door, they would possibly be a little more reconciled to their fate if they were transported to a little, old-established rural settlement known as Kayuga on the Hunter River in New South Wales. The teacher of the school there has expressed his sympathy with the Sydneysiders, in a satirical letter, and which incidentally is eloquent witness to the fact that the grievances of the country are not all imaginary The letter in parts is worth quoting "Mv school,” says the teacher, “is 33ft by 18ft by 12ft, and has an average attendance of 25 pupils. Our thermometer hangs inside tho building, which is the coolest part of the place. I append the registration of temperature for the first fortnight or so of February out of sympathy for the poor citizens of Sydney who are sweltering’ under the intense heat. The registrations are: February 1, llBdeg; February 2,105 dog; February 3,113 deg; February 4,114 deg, February 6,98 deg; February 6, l^deg; February 7,114 deg; February 8,116 deg; February 9, llOdeg; February 10, lOOdeg; February 11, 102 deg; February 12, lo7deg; February 13, llOdeg; February 14, llOdeg; February 16, llOdeg; February 16, llfideg.'* One can readily believe the writer of the letter that he has never experienced anything approaching Kayuga for heat. He finds comfort and consolation, however, in the fact that it might be worse, for he cheerfully adds that before the good old Mimraer time p&saee Kayuga fully expects to register 120 deg.
