Ministerial Tlie Auckland Education Board on Wednesday carried a motion deeply regretting the necessity of Sir James Parr relinquishing the portfolio of education which he had filled with distinction and with advantage to education, and offered sincere congratulations to him on his appointment as High Commissioner. The Hon. 0. J. Hawken. Minister of Agriculture accompanied by his private* secretary, Mr L E. Johnson, passed through Dunedin on Thursday by the through express en route to Invercargill, having left the Ministerial party, which toured throughCentral Otago, at Palmerston. Mr Hawken returned north on Saturday. The Hon. A. D. M‘Leod, Minister of Lands, and his private secretary, Mr A. W. Mulligan, who have been touring through Central Otago, joined the north express at Oamaru on Thursday. The Hon. 0. J. Hawken. Minister of Agriculture, passed through Dunedin en route from Invercargill to Timaru on Saturday. Prior to leaving for Australia Mr W. Toole, manager of the St. Bathans Gold Mining Company, was entertained by some 30 residents and employees at a social held at the Yulcan Hotel on Saturday afternoon On behalf of the gathering, Mr A. Godena presented Mr Toole with a set of military hair brushes and pendant, and, in doing so, spoke of the popularity of the guest as a manager and as a citizen. Several other gentlemen also spoke in glowing terms of the esteem in which the guest w.as held Mr W. Toole suitably replied. Mr Molyneux has been appointed manager in succession to Mr Toole. Mr Ronald William Mathieson was admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Court, on Tuesday by his Honor Mr Justice Sim. on the motion of Mr Tonkinson.

Our Wellington correspondent re]K>rts that at a meeting of the Standing Committee of the New Zealand Alliance it was decided to appoint Mr C. R. Edmond as general secretary of the New Zealand Alliance to fill the vacancy caused by the death of the Rev. John Dawson. Miss Doris Vane, one of England’s foremost sopranos, arrived from the north on Wednesday afternoon. Miss Vane has appeared frequently at Queen’s Hall, Lon don, and has been associated with Sir Henry Wood and the famous Queen’s Hall Orchestra on many notable occasions. Although Miss Vane’B tour of New Zealand is practically a holiday one, music lovers in Dunedin will welcome an opportunity of hearing her glorious voice before she leaves our city. Mr W. G. Aldridge, M.Sc., who has been director of the Invercargill Technical College for the past five years, has been appointed director of the King Edward Technical College. There were 20 applications for the position, which was made vacant by the retirement of Mr Angus Marshall. The second applicant on the list was Mr A. M'Fadyen, B.Sc., M.1.M.E., at present assistant director at Dunedin, and head of the engineering department. A London cablegram reports that Mr J. W. H. T. Douglas, the well-known cricketer, was admitted to hospital suffer ing from appendicitis. An operation has been performed. An Auckland message states that a meeting of delegates of the A. and P. Association, by an absolute majority, elected Mr W. W. Massey, president of the Auckland A. and P. Society, a member of the Board of Agriculture. Mr S. C. Doyle, station master at Balclutha, has received notice of his promotion to a similar position at Oamaru, and will be succeeded by Mr W. G. Stewart, who has been head clerk and transport officer at Balclutha for the past three years. Mr Wm. M‘Kegg, business manager *hM supervisor for the Kawarau Gold Joining Co. (Ltd/}, at the dam, has accepted an appointment at Palmerston North as managei for the Midlands Brewery Co. (Ltd.). Mr M‘Kegg will be tendered a complimentary smoke concert and social evening in the Town Hall, Queenstown, by the employees of the com pany and* the public of the QueenstownArrowtown districts, where he has become very well known and highly respected. Sir Robert and Lady Stout were passengers by the midday express on Saturday en route to Wellington.

Mr Tho 9. Walsh, the Roslyn Bowling Club’s greenkeeper, left by the express yesterday morning for Christchurch to supervise the of the Sydenham and other bowling greens. He has been asked to call at Timaru on his. return iourney and give expert advice to some of the bowling clubs of that city.
