The steamer Waitonio is to be laid up indefinitely, and the crew have been given notice. Some of the stokehold crew still refuse to sail unless a new cook is provided, and this demand the Union Company firmly declines to grant. As no settlement was in prospect the company decided to lay up the vessel, and she has been taken into the stream where she will lie until she obtains a new crew. An arrangement. has been come to at Balclutha with the Gas Company by which the latter’s works will he closed shortly and the town lighted with electricity (reports the Free Press).
