TERRIBLE BUFFETING
VESSEL SPRINGS A LEAK.
GISBORNE, March 2. The Harbour Board’s newly purchased auxiliary scow Ngahou received a terrible buffeting on the voyage from Wellington to Gisborne. At times all hope of her living out tho gale was abandoned The Ngahou left Wellington at 6 o’clock on Friday morning, and experienced moderate head winds till off Castle Point, when she struck a heavy easterly gale, which lasted till yesterday morning. Mountainous seas Rwept the vessel forward. The bulwarks were stove in and minor damage wag done.
The greatest danger was due to a leak which began yesterday morning. In a short time the engine room was flooded. The pumps were manned, and the crew managed to keep the ship afloat. If the leak had occurred during the height of the gale the master is of the opinion that nothing .could have saved the ship from capsizing. Running before the gale the Ngahou made a speed of 20 miles an hour between Cape Turnagain and Cape Kidnappers. The scow arrived at Gisborne at 8 o’clock last evening with two and a half feet of water in the engine room. The vessel is to he used for shipping stone for the harbour works.
