BALLOT PAPERS.

PROPERTY OF VOTER. CHRISTCHURCH. February 19. A ballot paper is the property of a voter until it ‘S deposited in tho ballot box. On those grounds Messrs I'. L. Davies. J.P.. and 11. F. Herbert, J.P., dismissed in tne Magistrate's Court to-day a charge of fraudulently destroying a ballot paper it the last general eloetion. Tho defendant was a widow, and the evidonce in the case was heard earlier in the wock when the bench rosorvod its decision until to-day. In dismissing the information Mr Davies stated the case had had the most careful consideration The bench had come to the conclusion that a ballot paper was tho property of a voter until tho time that it waa deposited in a ballot box. On that ground it was the opinion of the bench that the case should bo dismissed. However, if the authorities deemed the case to bo of suoh importance that they thought it should be tested by a stipendiary magistrate, the charge would be dismissed without prepc dice to any further action.
