VICE-RIUAL. The Governor-General and Lady Alice Fergusson returned to Gisborne on Wednesday alter a visit to the coast. His Excellency inspected the Waiapu (Masonic) Lodge room at Tokomaru Bay; and their Excellencies paid a visit to the Tokomaru Bay public school, whore Sir Charles Fer fugsou gave an address to the children. He afterwards paid a visit of inspection to the Native school at Tokomaru Bay* and later made a brief stay at Tolaga Bay, where, after being entertained at luncheon by prominent residents, visits were paid to the school and the cottage hospital. The Governor-General also inspected the lodge room of Lodge Uawa. In the evening his Excellency attended the annual reunion of the South African veterans in Gisborne. On Friday visited five town schools and the High School, where the Governor-Gen-era' (Sir Charles Fergusson) delivered addresses. After lunch the party inspected the Kaiti Freezing Works, where his Excellency delivered a brief address to the men. Later the party motored to Mtnutuke. where they were accorded a Maori welcome, and his Excellency spoke to the Te Ari school children. The Vice-Regal party left Gisborne on Saturday morning for Rotorua after a visit of several days to various districts in Poverty Bay. Before their departure his Excellency expressed his hearty appreciation of the welcome given himself and Lady Alice, aud of the many opportunities given them of meeting the returned soldiers and the young people of the district. Ministerial. The Hon. J. A. Young (Minister of Public Health) will arrive in Dunedin from Christchurch by the first express today. He has telegraphed the Mayor (Mr H. L, Tap ley, M.P ) that he will open the Hospital Corfference on Wednesday morning and will leave again on Friday. Daring his stay, Mr Young, who will be accompanied by his private secretary (Mr J. T. Waugh), will stay at the Grand Hotel and will transact departmental business. The Prime Minister has returned to Wellington from the East Coast. Baron Dickson, of Sweden, arrived at Auckland from Sydney by the Aorangi for the sword-fishing at Russell. He will later go to Christchurch. The Hon. J. Allan. Premier of Victoria, who has been visiting Dunedin, has returned north. With the consent and warm approval of the Bishop of London, the Rev. C. II Ritchie (formerly of Dunedin) has (writes our London correspondent) been appointel deputy vicar of St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields during the absence abroad, owing to illhealth, of the Rev. 11. R. L. Sheppard. The Rev. J. J. North has relinquished the office of secretary to the Council of Christian Congregations at Christchurch. v as he is leaving to take up the position of principal of the New Zealand Baptist Council at Auckland A meeting of the council passed a resolution placing on record its great appreciation of the valuable services rendered by the Rev. Mr Nortli to the council. Mr G. E. who left Dunedin on Tuesday morning to take up the position of deputy-registrar of the Supreme Court at Invercargill, was prior to his departure presented by the staff at the Dunedin office with a clock and a jardiniere. Messrs J. Mlndoe, A. E. Dobbie, and H. Kirkwood referred to Mr Pollock's many good qualities, remarking that to eveiyone he was always courteous and obliging. Viscount and Viscountess Allenby left by the Aorangi on Tuesday for England. Mr R. R. Hunter, rector of the Balelutha School, has been appointed an inspector by the Education Department. He will be under the Southland Education Board, with headquarters at Invercargill, and will probably leave Balclutha very soon. Mr Hunter has been stationed at Balclutha for the past two and a-half years, and during that time has been highly respected by parents and 'children alike. A Sydney message says that at St. Andrew’s Cathedral. Miss Norah Wright, daughter of Archbishop Wright, was married to Mr Gregory Wilde Warren, of New Zealand. The Hon. J. Allan, Premier of Victoria accompanied by Mrs Allan, left by the first express on Wednesday morning cn route for Rotorua. A Palmerston North message reports that the Board of Directors of the Y.M.C.A. has appointed Mr F. M Keesing, B.A. Auckland, general secretnrv. Mr Keesing has been connected with Y.M.C.A. movements si nee.the age of 12 years. In 1921 he went to the United States for further secretarial training, and accepted the post of e-ssbtant boys’ work director at Westside Y.M.C.A., Chicago. Mr Keesing returned from the States three years ago, and graduated B.A. at Auckland University. Mr ]. Caoghley (Director of Educati m) wa3 present at the meeting of the Education Board on Thursday and conferred with the board on educational matters. All the discussions were taken in committee. A tribute to the work of the Rev. Knowles Kempton as secretary of the Council of Christian Congregations was paid by the Rev. H. E. Bellhouse and the Ker. Tulloch Yuille at last night’s meeting. As a mark of the appreciation of the services rendered he was asked to accept a cheque and the best wishes of the council in his new sphere in Whangarei. At its monthly meeting last week the Hospital Board received a list of the nurses who had been successful in the rccont State examination for nurses. The report stated that Nurse Hazel Benfham was first on the list for the Dominion. It was decided to congratulate Miss Bentham, and also the matron and teaching staff of the training school, on the success achieved by Miss Bentham. The Education Department has advised the Otago Education Board of the appointment of Mr F. G. A. Stuckey, of Wanganui, as senior inspector of schools in Otago, in succession to Mr T. R. Flem Jug (senior inspector in Otago), ndio will retire on superannuation at the end of the month. The new inspector will take Up his duties in Otago on May 1. Knight) extended a hearty welcome to Mr Garth Gallawav, who was appointed last week as the representative of the combined district of the city of Dunedin and the borough of West Harbour. Mr Gallaway suitably acknowledged the welcome. Subsequently Mr Gallawav was appointed a member of the Finance, Benevolent, Sana torium, and Hospital Committees. Mr A. Vere Winchester, for the pa*t five years manager of the Bank of Australasia, Whangs rei, formerly accountant and for a time acting manager at Dunedin, has been appointed manager ot the bank at Christchurch. Mr Winchester expects to leave Whangarei in the course of the next few weeks Mr Taylor, of Taumarunui, has been appointed manager at Whangarei Miss Irene Horniblow, who has recently returned after having completed a course of study in the Old Country, has been offi cially advised that she has been successful in the final examination for Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music. A message from Wellington reports that Mr R. W. Dalton, senior British Trade Commissioner in Australia, has been instructed to pay an official visit to the Dominion prior to his departure for England in April. Mr Dalton will leave Australia about the end of February. The Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. 0. J. Hawken) announces that the vacancy on the Dairy Produce Export Control Board caused by his own retirement from that body on attaining td Ministerial rank, has been filled by the appointment of Mr T. A. Winks, of Hawera.
