THE AQUARIUM

At the last meeting of the Otago Acclimatisation Society Mr Howes, who has had in hind the management of the Aquarium at th© Exhibition, stated that the mortality amengst the fish at the Aquarium was below the usual and below that which had been experienced at Christchurch and Auckland. He suggested that the assistance of Mr Duncan might be granted in connection with the Aquarium. The matter caused considerable discussion, it being contended that. Mr Duncan’s services were otherwise required in connection with the work of the society. Mr Ilowes said Mr Duncan would be available for tho purposes of the society at a moment’s notice, if his services were required.* . It vas finally lesolved, on the motion of Mr Butterworth, that on an application being made by Mr Howes to the president und the chairman of the committees, the services of Mr Duncan, or any other member of the society’s staff, be grouted for a short period, his expenses and salaries to be paid by the Aquarium Co. In support of his motion Mr Butterworth said that the secretary had had this season the biggest collection of fish eggs the society had ever held, und it, therefore, required the services of the whole of its staff. Mr Duntan’s services wer© i ceded for a fortnight or throe weeks everv year on this work, but after that he generally went ranging. It was quite right for Mr Howep to say that the experience to be gained by Mr Duncan at, the Aquarium would be an rdreati-jn to him, and he thought they should also send Mr Clariugbold to the

Aquarium to see how fish thrived under the conditions they lived in there.
