An incredible situation is. revealed in Chicago by the activities of the police, who recently, 0000 strong, invade 1 the haunts, of the underworld, arresting 200 outlaws, seizing in house-to-house visits 3000 rounds of ammunition, a large number of revolvers, 1500 gallons of alcohol, and several barrels of wine. During the previous week live policemen had been killed and two seriously wounded in pitch buttles with gangs of “bootleggers.” As a crime centre Chicago occupies an unrivalled position among the great cities of the world. It has long outstripped New York. To cope with the epidemic of violence nil the judges have been forced to forego their vacations, nn:l an order has been’ issued to expel all aliens /convicted of crimes carrying sentences exceeding u year’s hard labour.
In a shoplifting ense at Wellington the Magistrate (Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M.) said: “She’s got no family; she’s got everything she wants, and yet she steals like this. What is the court to do? I don’t want, to send a respectable woman to gaol. I’ll flue her £2O on the first charge and convict and discharge her on the second. /Her husband must stop her allowance.” Mr Perry: “But, your Worship, the burden of this will fall upon her husband.” Mr Hunt: “Well, let him tuke away her boots, lie must stop her from robbing shops.”
