SLY CROG-SELLINC. FIXE OF £SO IMPOSED. ASHBURTON, August 7. A middle-aged man mimed Frederick Edward Talbot Laughlin, who admitted having been engaged in the sly grog business for 15 years, was fined £SO and costs this morning on pleading guilty to three charges—first, keeping liquor for sale in a *o-license district; second, selling liquor f and third, procuring liquor without noti>* fying the seller that it was for a no-license district. On the first charge the fine was £3O, on the second £2O, and on the third accused was convicted and discharged. The Magistrate warned defendant that If he came up again within five years kt would go to gaol for the maximum terra. The defendant, who had not been con* victed before, said that tho drinking tooftf place mostly among friends.
EX-BANK MANAGER ARRESTED* CHARGED WITH TIIFJ-T. STRATFORD, Annual 7. Wm. ICcrr, ex-bank manager, was arv rested this afternoon, and was charged before a justice of the pence with that, on or about July 1, 1925, at Stratford, being n servant of the Union Rank, he did steal the sum of £495 in money, the property of the bank. Detective Walsh asked for A remand, and said he was instructed to ask that bail, if granted, bo made substantial ns other charges were pending. The tom sum involved was over £6OOO.
