GOLF

DIVOT.

BY

The annual tournament promoted by the Roxburgh Golf Club will be held on August 21 and 22. The principal event Is the Goldfields Championship, which will be decided by stroke play over 36 holes. The secretary informs me that the club has just completed the erection of a new pavilion and has improved one or two of the holesand that the links are in good order. Furthermore, arrangements have been made this year whereby luncheon will be obtainable on the links during the tournament. The Otago Golf Club has invited coimtry clubs to send representatives to Balniacewen on August 8 for the purpose of an all-day match, Otago Club v. country districts. Other matches which are in prospect at Balinacewen are between the Otago Golf Club and the Invercargill and North Otago Clubs. It is proposed by the Otago Club to pit sides of representatives from its members against these clubs on the same day, August 15. It rather unfortunately happens that August 15 will be the one Saturday on which the United States destroyer squadron will be in Dunedin and if, as is highly probable, a good team of golfers could be selected from the persondel of the squadron an attractive match might have been arranged between the visiting Americans and the local club. Possibly the St. Clair Club will take the hint. J. Goss, of Wanganui, who • won the amateur championship of New Zealand in 1923 on his home links, and was defeated in the final at Auckland last year by Leo Quin, of Eltham. will not be a competitor for the title at Shirley in September. A. Compston, the North Manchester professional, seems to have had a great slice of luck in the final of the Thousand Guineas Tournament at Gleneagles on the sth inst. He was 1 up on Abe Mitchell at the 17th, and he was enabled to halve the last hole by his ball striking a spectator and falling on the green. This gave him the match. The following is a list of the winners of the championship of the St. Clair Club since 1914:

At the Shirley links on tho ICth the final of the Captain’s Trophy was played. R A- Wilson, playing from scratch, beat H. S. Williams, handicap 10, 2 up and 1 to play. Wilson played good golf throughout the tournament, in which he had to win seven matches to come out victorious. For the second week in succession a Karori (Wellington) player on tho 18th holed out from the tee. The honour' this time rests with a lady, Miss K. Kerr, who did a 100 yards hole in one. Two Waiuku golfers have joined the “hole in one club” this season. The first case occurred about a month ago at the 4th hole, distance 198 yards, when Dr Howden holed his tee shot, using a cleek. Tho second occurred more recently when G. Barr holed his tee shot at a short hole of 112 yards, using a mashie.

A PROFESSIONAL REINSTATED. WELLINGTON. July 23. A meeting of the New Zealand Golf Council considered a letter from Dean, professional, admitting that the contention that the terms of his agreement did not permit the council to send him to the South Island was wrong, and expressing his willingness to go anywhere required. The council thereupon decided to reinstate Dean.

THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP. SIDNEY, July 28. The open golf championship of Australia was won by F. Popplewell, with T. Howard aecond.
