Friday evening, j Last Fnday evening the students of Knox College held another of their delightful evenings in the hull at the College, which had 4>een gaily decorated with greenery and flowers. Ihmcing was kept going all evening, and a most enjoyable time spent. There were present: i rofeasor and Mrs Hewitson, Dr and Mrs Drennan, Professor and Mis Jack, Misses Smith, Callender, Barr, Rule, Fairburn, Morison, Rutherford, Griffiths, Hartmann, N. The hostess received her guests in the drawing room, where bridge was played. Thero were present: Mescnunes Cook, Sinclair, Hazlett, and Wilson, Misses Koberts, Bridgeman, and Williams, Messrs Oldham, Bovan-Brown, Sisc Sinclair, Haggitt, G. Sinclair, and Hazlett. A very enjoyable afternoon tea was given at the Otago Women’s Club on Friday afternoon. the Hostesses being Mesdames Vivian, Le Cren, and G. B. Hill. It was given in honour of Mrs C. R. Chapman, who, with her husband, left for Wellington this week to join the lonic, en route for England. Last week Mrs Ivor Evans (Australia), who has been on a visit to Dunedin, and has been staying at the Grand Hotel, gave a farewell bridge party at the Otago Women’s Club in order to say goodbye to some of the friends who had entertained her daring her visit to the Dominion. The water colour room was used to lounae in with comfortable seata and carpets. whilst a delicious supper was partaken of in the Early Settlers’ Hall, where the tables were gaily decorated with chrysanthe mums, streamers of blue and gold, and blue and gold balloons. On Thursday afternoon the Capping ceres niony took after which the graduates* friends and relations were entertained at tea in the Victoria Hall. Lady Ferguson left on Thursday for Auckland, where she will stay for a short time. Mr and Airs C. R. Chapman went north by the express on Thursday to join their ship at Wellington for England. A most successful aiternoon was given by the committee of the recently formed Plunket Society last Wednesday, the Oddfellows’ Hall being filled to overflowing by the large numbers who attended to help on the good cause. After a most enjoyable programme of musical items and recitations was given, afternoon tea was served, and greatly appreciated by the ladies present. Miss Esther Thornton (Christchurch) is visiting Wellington, and is staying with her sister, Mrs Newnham, at Karori. Madame Winnie Fraser arrived in Wellington on Tuesday on hex return journey to the south from Auckland, where she was soloist for Mr Maughan Barnett's recitale ? and also for the Royal Auckland Male Choir. Miss Esme Morgan (Napier) is the guest of Mrs C. Tringham. Always a very enjoyable occasion, the ladies' night of the Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen’s Association is always looked forward to with pleasurable anticipation. And on Friday that anticipation was justified. Even the weather played its part, . and showed what it could do for once. The vestibule, staircase, and passages had been draped with flags, and the guests were received at the foot of the staircase by Mr and Mrs Hugh Wright. For the time being the reading room was turned into a concert chamber, and there an excellent programme was given which was greatly enjoyed. Among the various items were songs by Mrs Grange, Mr Hales, and Mrs Wilfred Andrews; humorous items, Mr Eastbrook and Mr Barcham; trombone solo, Mr H. Oskes; a violin solo by Master Lavin; and humorous stories told by Mr Marcus Marks. Supper was served later in the dining room, where the tables were arranged with spring flowers. Dancing provided the rest- of the evening’s entertainment. Youth and the complete enjoyment of the passing hours were much in evidence at the annual dance of the Wellington Technical College Students’ Association, which was held in the gymnasium of the new college on Friday evening. The room is a delightful place in which to dance, and, with its artistic decorations, made a most effective setting for the pretty frocks which were worn by the girl dancers. The art students had been responsible for the decorative scheme, which had been carried out with streamers of different shades of yellow varied yvith mauve suspended in festoons from the overhead beams. Alternating with the streamers were ropes of lycopodium, and over the lights were shades of ribbon streamers in the same colouring. A brightly burning fire at one end of the room was hy no means despised by the onlookers and chaperones, and tne charmed circle around it lasted well into the night. The chaperones were Mrs Howell, who was wearing grey with a fichu of softly falling cream lace; Mis Bennett, navy blue beaded in red; Mrs Glendenning, black satin; Mrs M'Vicar, in blacß; and Mrs Evans. The committee comprised Misses Campbell, Hulbert, Jackson, Laycock, and Welsby, Messrs Austin, H. L. and W. Bennett, Crane, Gribble, and Juriss, the hon. sec. being Mr H. L. Bennett. Among those who were present were: Mr Howell (Director of the College), Mr and Mrs Linley Richardson, the latter wearing a frock of black satin with a tunic overdress of white and gold striped gauze; Miss Bennett, blue and silver brocade; Miss Wallace, geranium red embossed marocain; Miss Seymour, Mr> Dormer, Mrs Hartley, in canary yellow lace; Mrs Carmichael, Miss M'Cale, Miss Neale, Miss Gregory, Miss Brown, Miss Y. Bentley, Misses E. and W. Johnston, Miss Berg, Miss Lawrence, Miss Paterson, Miss Gooder, Messrs Evans, Harris, Ellis and Bennett.

CARTERTON, July 23. A large number attended the Memorial Tennis Club’s annual ball, which was held in the Exchange Hall, Masterton, including many visitors from South Wairarapa and Wellington. The decorative committee —Misses M. Toxward, L. Williams, and Messrs D. J. Welch, C. Dagg, V. Wilton, and M. Fairbrother—deserve congratulation on their work. The supper oommittee who provided a delicious eupper, comprised Mesdames E. M. Bundle, H. Perry, and L. A. Wadham, Misses E. and K. Wickens, Howard, R. Williams, and Grant. Humphries and family, of West laratahi, who are shortly leaving the district, were entertained by the residents on Tuesday evening at a social gathering. During an interval in the proceedings, Mr W. Wilson (Carrington) presented Mrs Humphries with a dressing case, a travelling rug, and handbag. Dancing was then indulged in. Mrs U. 11. Beetham and Mrs Bethell (Masterton) left this week by the Aorangi on a visit to Europe. The Druid's annual ball at Masterton was a great success. The decorations were extensively carried out in the lodge colours—red and gold, while narrow ribbons, balloons, confetti, and streamers played a conspicuous part. The ladies’ committee comprised Mc-sdames Fairbrother, Newlands, ■tiall Andrews, and Jacobs, and Misses Shuckleton, Miller (4), Graham, Wilmshurst Fowlds, and Bennett. Extras were played by Misses Finlayson and Spackman, and Mr N. Kirk. A pretty wedding was solemnised at St. Matthew’s Church, Masterton, on Saturday afternoon, when Miss Winifred Violet Drenkley, A.T.CX., eldest daughter of Mr 3 Brenkley and the Mr H. Brenkley, J.P., was married to Mr Charles Groombridge,’ only son of Mr and Mrs E. Groombridge. The bride, who was given away by her brother, Mr Evan Brenkley, looked charming in a cinnamon brown tunic frock, with hai to mutch, and carried a lovely spray bouquet of asparagus fern and chrysanthemums. The bridesmaids, Misses Hermes and Onyx Brenkley (sisters of the bride), wore pink and green irocks respectively, and carried posies of carnations and violets. The bridegroom was supported by Mr C. Pickering. The Rev. W. Bullock officiated, and Mr C. Spencer Compton was at the organ. A very pretty wedding of widespread interest was solemnised at the residence of the bride’s parents on Wednesday* afternoon, when Gladys, third daughter of Mr and Mrs W. MacKenzie, of Manaia, Masterton, was married to Dougald, son of Mrs T. Thompson, of Masterton, and the late Mr T. Thompson, of Otaki. The Rev. John Davie was the officiating clergyman. The bride looked charming in a beautiful maizecoloured georgette gown, beaded in gold with a golden coronet head-dress. She was attended by Miss Jessie Cooper, as bridesmaid, who wore a pretty toast-coloured georgette frock with a head-dress of goli leaves. Mr Harold MacKenzie was best man. The bride's travelling dress was of navy blue corded silk, trimmed with gold, with hat to match. The engagement is announced of Miss Netta Sorenson, fifth daughter of Mr and Mrs C. Sorenson, of Palmerston North, to Mr Eric Arthur Parr, of Masterton, second son of Mr and Mrs F. M. Parr, of Auckland. Mr and Mrs Vernon Reed, of Bay of Islands, are the guests of Mr and Mrs jI. G. Williams, Lansdowne. Miss Cross, daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Cross (Columba road), who has been an invalid for some considerable time, has gone in company with her mother and nurse to Rotorua, where they intend to spend the winter months.

Jackson, and Mrs Gorrie, etc. The annual re union of the King’s College Old Boys’ Association commenced last Thursday, when a number of members from various parts of the Dominion arrived to tfcke part in the celebrations. A most successful concert was given on Friday evening before a crowded audience in St. Mark’s Hall, Lower Remuera. The programme opened with an instrumental trio by Miss M. Stoddart and Messrs Eric Waters and II O. Macfarlane. This was followed with a humorous sketch by Messrs M'Callum and Frisfcon, alter which Mr Cliff Crowther sang Miss Nancy Hanna, besides singing twice, introduced a costume song, “Lackadav,” in which four young ladies provided the action in oldworld frocks. Miss Miller sang “Hinemoa's Love Song,” and for an encore she contributed a pretty negro song. Mr Guy Pierce sang “Tne Call of the Wild,” after which came Mrs R. Singer’s violin solo, followed by a conjuring performance by Mr Axford, and an exhibition of the latest ball-room dances by Isolde and Alexia closed the first part of the programme. The latter portion was devoted to a one-act farce. “Fancy Free,” by Stanley Houghton, in which Mr H. J. Bentley took the role of Ethelbert, and Mrs Humphrey Clark, Mrs S. E. Thomas, and Mr W. H. Graham represented the other characters. Miss Agnes Lawlor (Christchurch) i* visiting friends In Auckland. Mrs 0. W. Binney, of Guienea Court Remuera, who passed away at the advanced age of 82 years last Monday after a short illness, had been a resident of Auckland for over sixty years; her husband died some year* ago. Haezard, of Chili, South America, and Miss Binney. The interment wap private, and took place at Purewa, only immediate relatives being present. WEDDING. On June 30 at the home of the bride's parents, Shag Point, Elizabeth Angus, only daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Gilchrist, of Shag Point, was married to George, youngest son of the late Mr and Mrs A. M‘lntosh, also of Shag Point. The Rev. J. Chisholm, of Palmerston, officiated. The bride, who was given away by her uncle, Mr A. Waugh, wore a pretty frock of cream brocade crepe de chine with georgette sleeves, the frock being draped to one side and caught with a diamond cluster ornament. Her embroidered veil was held in place by a tiara of orange blossom, and she carried a sheaf erf arum lilies. The bridesmaid, Miss E. M‘lntosh, sister of the bridegroom, wore a frock of lavender satin, trimmed with lavender fur. and a veil to match. She carried a posy of violets. Mr D. M‘lntosh, brother of the bridegroom, acted as best man.
