WATERSIDE WORKERS RESUME. There were signs of general activity on the Dunedin waterfront on Wednesday, normal working conditions being restored after a week’s idleness. This satisfactory ending of the dispute between the shipping employers and the waterside workers was brought about in the morning-. A meeting of the union was held after 8 a.m., when about 180 men were in attendance, while a large number awaited the result of the deliberations outside the union rooms. After the position had been discussed, it w-as decided by a very large majority (so it is stated) to resume work on condition that the question of an increased rate for handling the KawatirTs Newcastle coal cargo be considered by the Disputes Committee at a meeting to be presided over by an independent chairman. The various shipping employers agreed to the request, and it was then announced that the men would accept engagement at 1 p.m. As a result of this decision the Kawatiri’s winches, after being silent for many days (the vessel arrived here on the morning of July 9 from Newcastle and Bluff) were set in action in the afternoon. At 1.15 p.m. the Kawatiri’s decks, which had been lifeless for over 13 days, were a scene of activity. At the time stated the hatches of No. 1 and No. 3 holds were removed, and 15 minutes later the first basket of coal was hoisted and dumped into one of a long line of trucks on the wharf.
