DAIRY PRODUCE.

BUTTER PRICES LOWER. GOOD DEMAND FOR NEW ZEALAND CHEESE. (From Cub Own Correspondent.) LONDON, April 7. Colonial butter is 6s weaker, Argentine 10s, Danish 43 The market continues to show weaknesses, which (says The Grocer) is not surprising in view of the circumstances that present rates are coniderably above thoso ruling at this time last year. Ihere is now less inquiry for colonial butter from the Continent, where prices of late have denoted a distinctly weaker tendency. The seasonal decline in prices is approaching, and with good quantities still being shipped from the Antipodes, further reductions ir. prices appear unavoidable.' English batter is in larger supply at country centres, and prices tend lower, the average rate for best butter being 2s per lb. Milk continues in plentiful supply, but the surplus quantities at various stations do not meet with much attention. Irish butter was cn the market at this time last year, but this season’s make is scarcely expected before the end of this month. Th 9 make in Ireland at present is being consumed locally. Danish blitter has been in quiet demand at lower prices at 212 s to 2145; f.o.b. rates 200 sto 2045. The Copenhagen official butter quotation is 510 kr ner. against 522 kroner last week. To land Danish better in this coimtry 5s per cask has to be added to the knoner price oumed With lower Dutch offers, Danish butter h's met with less attention from German buyers, consequently quotations have mo ed in favour of buyers. The possibility of a strike in Denmark makes the position for Danish butter very uncertain for the present. Am arrival i? doe from Siberia, and it is expected that the exports from that country will be much larger than last year. Argentine butter has had a dragging sale, with quotations lower at 150 s to 1625. Colonial has been in slow demand at lower prices Values: Finest New Zealand salted 164 s 'to ]66s, unsalted 174 s to 130 s; finest Australian salted 160 s to 1625, fine 152 s to 1565, and unsalted 166 s to 170 s. From Australia the Largs Bay has arrived with 27,263 boxes, the Albania with 10,830 boxes, the Berwickshire with 21,435 boxes, and the Diogenes with 52,393 boxes; from New Zealand, the Pakeha with 56,334 boxes, the Port Albany with 21,645 boxes, and the Rotorua with 38,538 boxes; from Argentine, the Highland Lnird with 1313 cases, the Nariva with 9000 cases, and the Highland Glen with 16,244 boxes. New Zealand cheese is 2s lower; Dutch is also cheaper. Finest English cheese is in very short supply, and this bids fair to be soon exhausted. There is such a very good demand for milk that scarcely any factory cheese is being made. Finest Stilton blue is quoted at Is 4d, with lower qualities at less money. Stocks of Canadian are steadily diminishing, and prices are firmer—white 108 s to 112 s, and coloured 106 sto 112 s. Cold storage holdings in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario, including Montreal and Toronto, in March were 4,244,C971b, against 8,818,56? lb last year. From New Zealand the Pakeha has arrived with 14,273 crates, and the Rotorua with 26,065 crates. New Zealand cheese has been in better demand at easy rates—white 99s to 101 s, and coloured 99s to 101 s. The weakness of New Zealand cheese waft- only temporary, the market at the close showing a distinctly better tendency. Stocks are much below those at this time last year. OPPOSITION AT NEW PLYMOUTH. NEW PLYMOUTH, May ll! The opposition that has been evinced in this district to the Dairy Produce Control Aqt, and particularly to that section of the measure relating to the compulsory marketing of produce, was advanced a further stage to-day, when, at a representative gathering held at New Plymouth of Taranaki dairy producers, a resolution was passed forming a New Zealand Dairy Producers’ League, for the purpose of taking united action against the adoption and enforcement of absolute control in the marketing of New Zealand dairy produce for export. It wag also resolved that immediate steps should be taken to amend the Act by having the olauses interfering with free marketing deleted, and also that steps should be taken to revive the ward system of electing members of the Control Board.
