WELLINGTON NOTES.

(From Ou« Own Correspondent.) May 15. George Young came up from the south yesterday, and caught the Maunganui for

Sydney. He informed your correspondent that he expected to be away a year or so. George Price came across in the Aorangi, and witnessed the first day’s racing at Egment. He is at present in Wanganui, where he may stay for the meeting, and have a few Jj.ys here, before returning. Dick and Konmark were the only Tren-tham-trained horses to compete on the opening day at Egmont. The former, trained by W. Young, ran second in the big steeplechase. He was beaten b\ Tuki, who won over the same country last winter, but in the hack class. Tuki, by Quin Abbey—Sylvia Park mare, is trained by J. O’Neill at New Plymouth. He is engaged in the big events at Wanganui and Ellerslie, and a 61b penalty at the first-named place may not slop him winning again. Ornahu showed a return to form in the Tongalioe Hurdles, in which he beat everything but Savory, who had a fair pull in the weights. Savory (Husbandman—Marsuma) carries the same colours as Waiwera, a winner of the Grand National Hurdles some years ago. Lust winter Prince Rufus won the Tongahoe Hurdles and went on to Wanganui to scoie in-the Century, and turf history may repeat itself in the case of Savory. With H. Gray in the saddle. Hipo and Rafa were both backed and beaten. Willow Wai, a stable mate of the first-named pair, was supported for the Telegraph Hack Handicap, but he could only get second to King Pot, who ran first and second at Hamilton recently. King Pot is trained at Te Aroha by H. Eva, formerly of New Plymouth. He also scored in the open sprint event with Dan Quin, who beat the consistent Archeen, who ha? been raced at Napier Park, Rangitikei, Manawatu, and Hamilton, and has been in the money on neatly every occasion. There was a mix up at the start of the M‘Rae Memorial. The three most fancied runners were left standing. An inquiry was held, and it was found to be accidental. The winner turned up in the Otaki-trained Imperial Spark, who has greatly improved. He won a double at Egmont in February, and since then scored in the Feilding Cup. The Hack Steeplechase went to the Ha-wera-trained Kaforte (Guianforte-Kathleen), who was among the unsuccessful runners in ihe same event last winter. RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. EGMONT RACES. A few days ago (says the Christchurch Press) the trotting stallion Wildwood Junior developed very serious internal trouble, and rather than see an old favourite suffering, Mr W. Kerr decided to have him destroyed. Wild Wood Junior, who was by imported Wildwood out of the prolific mare, Thelma, was a full brother to Willowwood and Marie Corelli, and halfbrother to Adonis, Cameos, Waverley, and Lady Sybil. During his short racing career he was the only horse to win the New Zealand Trotting Cup twice, and later at the stud he proved himself a very successful sire. His best son was Admiral Wood, who secured the fastest performance over two miles in New Zealand and Australia. RACECOURSE SURPRISE. LONDON. May 1. A sensation was caused at Newmarket by Lord Astor’s horses. He had two representatives in the March Stakes, and declared to 'win with St. Germans, who started second favourite at sto 4. Ridden by F. Bullock, St. Germans finished last in a field of four. He lacked condition. Lord Astor’s other entrant., Bright Knight, a 20 to 1 chance, won by a short head, after leading throughout. RACING SENSATION. LONDON, May 1. The stewards at Hexham yesterday asked the doctor to examine the leading steeplechase jockey, F. B. Rees, after he had been unseated. The doctor found Rees to be drunk and unfit to ride. He has been suspended. Rees was the Donoghue of the crosscountry riders, and had a tremendous following. Last steeplechase season he won 108 races. The leading flat-race rider. E. Elliott, won 106 races during the whole year. SALE OF TROTTING HORSES. The National Mortgage and Agency Company conducted a sale of trotting horses in Russell’s stables, Gore, on Friday morning, when a number of fillies and geldings bred from well-known stock were offered on account of Mr Max Freidlander, Waimumu. There was a large attendance of trotting enthusiasts from all over the province, several of the principal purchases coming from Invercargill and the Western District. The sale opened slowly, the older sorts being offered first. These elicited no bids, were put aside until later on in the sale, when they were sold. The great majority of the younger Btock were keenly sought after, and the sale was a most satisfactory one. The top plicc of 85gns was paid for a rising six-year-old filly by Logan Pointer— Miss Wildpooie, the purchaser being Mr J. Butler (Winton). A filly rising seven years, by Logan Pointer—King Cole mare, brought 73gns, and was purchased by Mr M'Glinchey, Wyndham. WINNING TWO-YEAR-OLDS. The following table (says the Christchuroh Press) shows a list of winning two-year-olds of over £SOO for the season and the number of times they have finished in a place: No. of placiugs. £ s.
