New Zealand naturally wishes to produce its own bread, if only for safety’s sake in tirne'of war (tavs the Christchurch Sun). The problem is to protect tho grower amj yet to keep the loaf at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, no solution can be guaranteed. Complete State control and a State monopoly of wheat-importing has been tried, but the troublo remains. The dominion cannot have it both ways. Wo have been getting very high prices for our exportable produce, and we must bo prepared to pass some of the money on to the man who grows wheat for home consumption. If we do not, he will tako to some more profitable line of business.
