At the Supreme Court last week Mr R. S. M. Sinclair, of Dunedin, and Mr J. C. Purcell, of Tapanui, were admitted as barristers of the Supreme Court of New Zealand by Mr Justice Sim. The Otago Education Board notifies the following appointments:—Mr A. W. Morrin, herd master, Otekaike; Miss Berenice Grimaldi, assistant. Otekaike; Miss A. M. Angus, assistant, Matea. The Rev. J. K. Archer, Mayor of Christchurch, has intimated that he will not contest the Christchurch North seat at the Parliamentary elections. Mr F. R. Cooke was the second nominee of the Labour Party, and it is anticipated that he will now contest the seat. Mr C. T. Aschman, who recently retired from the position of head master of the Normal School, is regard’d as the possible Reform candidate for the seat.

At the Supreme Court on Tuesday Mr Reginald Alfred King wa» admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court by Mr Justice Sim.

Mr J. M. Turnbull, the newlv-elected Mayor of Whakatane, Bay of Plenty, is a native of Otago, his father having been connected with the National Mortgage and Agency Company in Dunedin for a number of years.

At the meeting of the Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, held on Tuesday, a letter was received from the Governor-General’s private secretary intimating that Sir Charles Fergusson would be pleased to accept the position of patron of the society. At the last meeting of the Vincent Hospital Board Dr T. Harrison, of Cromwell, and formerly of Dunedin, was appointed superintendent of the board’s two hospitals. He will reside at Oomwell. Dr Drockenshire, graduate of the Otago University, and now a resident of Auckland, was appointed assistant superintendent. He will reside at Clvde. Mr J. Gray Buchanan', J.P., 0 f Highgate London, spent a few days with Sir John and Lady Ross, who are old friends of his. He left for Wellington °? Tuesday to attend the annual dinner of the Chamber of Commerce there. Mr Buchanan is . the head of the well-known firm of William Jacks and Co.. London, and Mr Bonar Law, the distinguished statesman, was a partner of his. He is a member of the Advisory Committee to r,nt> Department of Overseas Trade, and also a member of the Advisory Committee on Imperial Mineral Resources. Mr Buchanan is delighted with the progress made in New Zealand since his last visit to th© dominion in 1891. He hopes to repeat his visit at an interval shorter than that between the present one and that which preceded it. Mr Robert Henry Traill has been appointed caretaker of the Stewart Island Reserves and Sanctuaries, under the control of the Lands and Survey Department The Sydney Sun newspaper (says a cable message) announces the engagement of Mr Justice Owen, of New South Wales, to Miss Hilda Chapman, daughter of Sir Frederick Chapman, of New Zealand. At the monthly meeting of the Otago A. and P. Society the following new members were elected:—Messrs James Bain, A. Chambers, Wm. M'Hugh, Wm. Rain6*y, A. Bolwell, James Sinton. Foster and Tliggenson. John Mitchell, Walter Dallas, Bert Sheddan, Anderson Bros., and M‘Rae Bros.

Out of twenty-six applicants Mr Ernest George, of Dunedin, has been appointed to the position of engineer-clerk to the Vincent County Council. Mr George, who is 35 years of age, is a son of Mr G R. George (secretary of the Bluff Harbour Board for many years). Mr George served at the war and rose to the rank of lieutenant

Mr F. W. Craig, late Superintendent of the local Telegraph Office, who voluntarily retired on superannuation on April 30. after having completed 41 years’ service in the department, was met last week by a very large gathering of the staff, who assembled to say good-bye. Mr R. M. Doull, senior supervisor, expressed his pleasure at seeing so many present. and said it was an indication of the popularity nf the retiring officer. In asking Mr Craig’s acceptance of a travelling bag and several other useful articles, Mr Doull referred t.o Mr Craig’s long service and the success that he had attained in thp deportment. Messrs A. G. Williams, J. Broad bent, and A. Thomas also spoke. Mr Craig, in reply, thanked those present for the handsome gifts. He assured them that they would remind him—if the necessity ever arose, and he did not think it would—of ttie many pleasant times spent with them nil. After introducing his successor. Mr E. IT. On the occasion of his retirement Mr R. D. Veitch, district telegraph engineer for Otago District, was entertained by tbe officers of the telegraph engineer’s branch at a complimentary social in the Early Settlers* Hall, Dunedin The gathering, numbering over 200, was attended by officers representing every section of the brunch from all parts of the district, and was a distinct compliment to Mr Veitch in his capacity as a district controlling officer. The Chairman, Mr A. H. Dr Basil Wilson, of Dunedin, has been appointed to the resident staff of the New Plymouth Hospital. Mr W. A. Thomson has been temporarily appointed demonstrator in clinical dentistry at the Dental School for the remainder of the current year in place of Mr G. H. Parkinson, who is on leave of absence doing post graduate work in America. Senior-sergeant Isaac Matliieson has received advice of his transfer to Ashburton. Mr Matbieson, who lias occupied his present position in Dunedin for a period of three and a-half years, was promoted from Invercargill, where he occupied the position of sergeant. Previous to that he was sergeant at Havelock and Wellington.

On Thursday the remains of the late Mr Thomas Craig, of East Taieri, were laid to rest in the local cemetery. A large company of friends met to show their last tribute of respect to the der-eased gentleman. Mr Craig arrived in New Zealand in 1864 in the ship Resolute, and has been in East Taieri ever since. He was the senior elder of the East Taieri congregation, and had held this office for very many years. No man in the district commanded more respect. In connection with the funeral a service was conducted in the East Taieri Church by the Rev. D. MCcsh, after which his brother office-bearers carried his remains to the cemetery. Mrs Craig predeceased her husband some months ago. Three sons and two daughters survive their parents. The late Mr Craig was of a retiring disposition, and beyond being an energetio member—in past years—of the Taieri Agricultural Society, did not trouble public affairs to any great extent.
