CLOSING HOURS OF SHOPS. DRAPERS AND “LATE NIGHT.” WELLINGTON, May 5. Important matters concerning the closing hours of shops were discussed with the Minister of Labour (the Hon. G. J. Anderson) to-day by a deputation representing the New Zealand Drapers’ Federation. The deputation said that the abolition of half-hour on the late nights was harsh, and they asked for its reinstatement and also that the late night falling in Christmas and New Year weeks should be reinstated. One speaker said that the whole of the trade was writhing under the present award. The Minister replied that there was no chance of getting an amendment through the present parliament. He thought tfie Arbitration Court had blundered in making the award apply to the country districts and seaside places. He could offer them no hope, and he advised them to attempt to reach an agreement with the employees. AUCKLAND TO WELLINGTON. METALLING OF ROAD COMPLETED. NEW PLYMOUTH, May 6. The work of metalling the main north road connecting Taranaki and Auckland will bo completed in a few days. The last of the metal on the Mokau-Awakino section was put on yesterday, and the whole of the Awakino Valley stretch will be metalled by next week. This, with the opening o’f the deviation ever the Rangariris, means that there wiiJ, be a metalled highway from Auckland to Wellington. Tne drawback at present is that there is no bridge over the Mukau River, a punt being used It was staled officialh to day that a start hod been made witn the bridge by the Publio Works Department, and that the work would be pushed
