RIFLE SHOOTING.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION MEETING. TRENTHAM, May 5. Rain fell prm tically ail night, and morning found tin* ranges soalcod, with lowci lug clouds threatening a further downpour. The Otago Match (800 and O<H) POO yards) commenced at the fornfer distance. This is the first of the long-range shoots counting for the Belt. Though the rain had ceased the light was very poor, causing trouble with elevation, and tlu* flags clung to the staffs closer than a brother, indicating an absence of wind for the second day in succession. Yet there Was a draught of heavy air from loft across the front of the targets, and this countering left “drift" of the bullet brought many, ever- among the experienced, to ear'll with a resounding crash Even so, here and there beards were soon showing that someone had got the hang of things, or else his liuky star was in the ascendant. Several came near the coveted total.

Dugoon (Nelson) scored 555, and D. M‘Kenzie (Opaki) 554.

D. J. ANDERSON YVINS THE KING’S PRIZE.

May 7. The weather this morning was bright and sunny after a frosty night. The Dominion Match (15 shots at 600yds) was the first fired. Among the first details down, Anderson (the Belt leader) made 71 out of a possible of 75, and no one has touched that yet. It is notable that Anderson, after securing fifth place in the aggregate on the first day of the Belt series, jumped to the lead on Monday, and was never displaced. The gold medal for the best Senior Cadet aggregate in A (service snooting) and B scries was won by R. Hare (YVellington), with a score of 579. H. Judkins (Christchurch) was runner-up with 540. The fight [or the Belt was shorn of excitement by the leader’s 10 points advantage at the start, and Nicholl, his nearest attendant, had difficulty in opening his account. His two. sight era were misses, hut he began business with a couple of bulls, and then sampled all kinds of hits except outers. The weather was excellent, and was the best seen for years for the King’s Match. The wind was light and from the right and easy to follow a 9 a rule, but alternating brignt sunlight and clouds caused elevation troubles. Nicholl and Anderson occupied targets 12 and 13 respectively in the middle of the range. YY’hile Nicholl was struggling with unproductive sighters, Anderson got 4 and decided to keep it later. The tw-o men’s cards at the end of the shoot read:— Anderson. 435345355542 48 Nicholl, 3553354534 40

In the meantime Keir (who was sixth in the aggregate) and Guiney (eleventh) had been engaged in an interesting contest, each getting on 47 and coming up to second and third places in the final. Their tie required a shoot off as already stated. Their cards read:— Keir, 4545555545 47

Guiney, 5455554455 47 Orr divided his score equally into bulls arid inners, climbing from thirteenth place to fifth. Hunt and Carter fell badly for old stagers, and Hogg dropped to tenth place, but had the excuse that this ordeal was a new thing for him. Reston kept seventh place, while Frank moved up two to sixth. There was a good deal of shuffling among the lower-placed men. Ching, 11. Feast, and M'Kenzie were fortunate enough to compile good hits of 46 each, but they were so far behind that it could not benefit them greatly, so far as the bigger prizes were concerned. As the shadows of the flag poles began to lengthen eastward, conditions became even better than at the start, the light being steadier, but several men seemed in trouble nevertheless. Notable among these was ihe double ex-champion Roots, who notched only 22. He certainly had not far to fall in the list, but ho fell the whole way. Of the rest, the less said, perhaps, the better. It is worthy of mention that the King’s Fifty included eight B grade men and six tyros. So ends the 1925 New Zealand Bisley. and the camp to-night is almost deserted by riflemen, while all the winds that worried marksmen during the past week have, under Diana’s frosty gaze, gone into recess to devise new tortures for the asph ing prize men next year.
