EARTHQUAKE SHOCKS.
AX ALARMIXG VISITATION. CHRISTCHURCH, May 5. Mr A. J. Murray, a resident of the Clarence Bridge district, describing his experiences there during last Thursday’* earthquakes, said: “The house shook and trembled like a leaf, and as soon as we could we rushed out into the open. There wc built a fire and camped ntroimd it all night. There was quite a number of smaller shocks, and, indeed, we did not feel the last one till Into on Saturday night. All through that night in the open, we could hear great boulders wiling down tho hillsides. In my opinion the earthquake started somewhere out at sea, for the sea had been making a great noise during the day preceding the shocks, and after they wore- over it seemed to become quieter. On the following day I was talking to tho ferryman at the Clarence and he pointed out to me many huge boulder* which could not hnve been moved with a crowbar. They had been loosened from the river bed and rolled about like nobble*. On the south side'of the river tne road for about a quarter of a mile is cracked and deeply Assured.”
