FIRES.
TIMBER-YARD 'BLAZE. WELLINGTON, May 7. A fire occurred at 9.20 p.m. at Mr E. S. Knight’s timber yard and joinery shop in Vivian street. It had a good hold when tho alarm was given. The roof fell in after 20 minutes, and a huge mass of flames shot skywards. Had the wind been blowing a number of houses adjoining would have gone. Mr Knight’s premises were completely gutted. The insurances are not available. May 8. Mr E. S. Knight’s timber yard and joinery shop in Vivian street, which were destroyed bv fire on Thursday night, were insured with the South British Company for £IB7O. The machinery was covered in tho same office for £ISOO, and the timber and stock in the Atlas Office for £4OO. It is understood that the police are inquiring into the cause of tho fire. May 9. Incendiarism is suspected in connection with the fire at Knight’s timber yard on Thursday night last. OUTBREAK AT BALFOUR. GORE, May 9. Tho Balfour Town Hall was destroyed by fire this morning. A dance was held last evening, when everything appeared safe. Apparently the blaze started at the boiler in the aiite-room. The hall was insured for £SOO. The building was owned by a company.
