SOUTHLAND MARKET REPORT. (From Our Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, July 18. During the past week the stock market for a,ll classes of store sheep has improved considerably. There is a very strong demand for all ages of breeding ewes, also for mixedsex hoggets and wethers. The yarding at country sales are much smaller than they usually are at this time of the year owing to the abundance of feed throughout the country. Vendors are holding off in the meantime. In. the fat stock section prices
are holding firm with a tedency to rise, prime ox beef and wether mutton being in strong demand here. This is owing also to the small yardings that we have been getting" lately. OAMARU MARKETS. .From Our Own Correspondent.) OAMARU, July 19. Business in cattle has also been on a email scale. As to store cattle the general impression is that the district has been pretty well cleared, some thousands having been'sold during the past few months to go north and south. There was not a single offering at the weekly eale, and the only business by private treaty has been in some mixed lines of two and three-year-ohl steers lit from £3 10s to £6, according to size and condition. The mam business has been
in butchers' animals, which have ben sold by auction and privately at the following prices:—Medium-weight bullocks, £9 15s to £lO 10s; light steers, £9 10s to £11; mediumweight heifers, £7 17s 6d to £8 2s 6d; light heifers, £5 12s 6d to £7 10s. Dairy cattle ane not in much request. At the weekly sale a medium entry without anything of much merit, met with a dull sale, the best cows offered going at from £4 to £6. There is still very little doing in the grain and produce market. Another surprise packet was presented in the form of a modest line of Velvet milling wheat, which, of course, found a ready buyer at the full price. There is an improved tone in the oats market consequent upon an all-round advance
in the prices of Canadians. Seed Cartons are in strong demand and difficult to obtain, and sales have been made at country stations at 5s 3d net, otherwise no business in oats is reported.
Oatensheaf chaff has provided the mam business, a number of lines having changed hands at £7 net, at country stations, and £7 5s net, delivered in Oamaru.
A sale was made of clover liay at £6 net delivered in Oamaru.

A MODERN OIL TANKER. The oil tanker H. T. Harper, recognised as a very luxurious vessel, arrived at Sydney recently with 1,800,000 gallons of bulk gasoline, the largest quantity of oil ever brought to Sydney in one ship. The 11. T. Harper is a steel, twin-screw oil-burning vessel of 3503 tons gross, and was built at Oakland, U.S.A., in 1921. The ship has oil engines, and is of the latest bulk oil type. She is built low in the water, and is able to stand heavy weather because of her rather unusual construction. The crew ol the H. T. Harper live in state compared with the crews of other freighters. They do not have their bunks in the forecastle, but in cabins—two persons to each cabin. Each cabin is fitted with electric radiators, and light, and the beds have white sheets and pillows. An electric laundry on board does washing free of charge for the crew. Eveny precaution is taken on board the ship to prevent any outbreak of fire. The crew all wear rubber shoes, and are not allowed to smoke. All winches, fires, etc., on board—in fact, anything requiring heat—are electrically equipped, with the exception of the engines, which are oil motors. The cook’s galley is even fitted with an electric range. EXPORT OF PORK. By the last mail the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board received a, letter from its London manager in respect to the shipment of pork. An extract from this letter is as follows: “While in Bristol a few weeks ago I called on Messrs E. Miles and 00., and had a long talk with their managing director, who is largely interested in the matter of the bacon trade, having several factories in the West of England. The manager of this firm is loud in his praise of the quality New Zealand frozen pigs which he has handled for many years past, but he is very disappointed that he cannot obtain regular supplies all the year round. I explained to him that it was a seasonal trade in New Zealand, hut he pointed out that in England pigs were fattened all the year round. He prefers the New" Zealand pigs to any other imported pork, and stated that we are very much ahead of the American quality. He states that he could take up to 2000 pigs a month all the year round, provided the price was satisfactory, and regular shipments could be obtained, etc. I also called on the manager of Messrs Sirier Bros, and
