FROZEN HEAT TRADE

QUESTION OF PREFERENCE. LONDON, May lb. Recently Mr A. R. Hassan, representative in London of the Australian Meat Council, submitted to Mr J. H. Thomas (Colonial Secretary) a scheme to ascertain from statistics what quantity of meat is required for consumption in Britain in a given period, plus a percentage for reserve ; and also to ascertain what amount qi home-grown meat is available for food in the same period, and to permit the dominions to supply the full quantity which home producers are unable to provide. If the dominions are unable to make up the total requirements, then sufficient meat of foreign origin should be permitted entry, under license, to complete the quantity required for the period. Replying to Mr Hassan’s letter, Mr Thomas says he has communicated with the Army Council, who state that they are fully alive to the desirability of encouraging a supply of dominion meat for army requirements, “and will bear in mind your representations when placing further orders ” May 17.
